My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Nikita is not in the Closer to Home Animal Advocates program. We are listing her as a courtesy to her owner and we will help screen applications. If you are interested in adopting, please fill out and submit our online application. Vet and personal references will be checked and a home visit is required. Also, a minimum 6' high fenced yard is required to adopt Nikita and invisible fences are NOT acceptable.

Nikita is a 9-month-old spayed female who needs to find a new home. She is probably Siberian Husky and might be mixed with Shiba Inu (we are guessing). This is an energetic young girl and, even though young, she is a dominant female and will not be adopted to a home with another female dog. She may be fine with a submissive male dog but we think she would be best as an only dog. Nikita is up to date on vaccinations and on monthly heartworm preventatives. Her owner answered our questions as follows:

What is the dog’s name? Nikita

How old is the dog? 9-10 months

How much does the dog weigh? 31 lbs.

Is the dog spayed/neutered? Spayed June 5, 2012

Are vaccinations up to date? Yes. As of what date? Will have 2nd distemper June 27th

What is the date of the last heartworm test? 6/5/12 Neg.

Has the dog been kept on monthly heartworm preventative? Just started Heartguard June 17th

Does the dog have any health condition(s) which require regular medication, supplements, or testing? None.

Why are you trying to find a new home for the dog? We were looking for a companion dog for our other female husky, but there is an underlying tension between the two dogs. In addition, the puppy has taken on alpha female role and my dog will not come near me if the other dog is there. My first dog will hang out in the hallway if the puppy is in the kitchen, and not come into my office if the other dog curls up at my feet.

Please describe the dog’s general personality/demeanor: Sweet, angelic, snuggly (will snuggle on couch under a blanket with my daughter watching tv, very good with being handled by humans – my daughter carries her around the house all the time, energetic has jumped on couch back and dining room table. This dog would make a FANTASTIC agility dog!

How does the dog interact with adults? Great!

Has the dog been around children? Yes, 11 & 14yrs. How does the dog do with children? Probably fine, but not a good dog for a house with small kids.

How does the dog react to strangers? Had some aversion to my tall, dark-haired, deep voiced husband initially.... seemed suspicious, and barked some... but that has stopped now. No problems with any other males she has come into contact with.

Have you ever seen aggression (or warning signs) toward a person? (This includes nipping, growling, snapping, etc.) Never.

What kind of activities have you shared with your dog? Trips to the dog park, walks

Does the dog live with any other pets now? Please give age/gender/breed/size of each pet: My female Siberian Husky who is 5-6 years old. Nikita has taken on alpha female role and happy to exclude other dog. Initial snarling/growling has been reduced to respectful avoidance.

How does the dog do with other dogs? Any restrictions? (For example, larger dogs, smaller dogs, dominant dogs, dogs of the same sex, etc.) Has been to the dog park and does well with all size dogs. Definitely alpha female.

Has the dog been around cats? Unknown

Does the dog chase other small animals? Birds and squirrels

Have you ever seen aggression toward other dogs... only toward my female dog in my house, but again that has been reduced to respectful distance.

The dog currently lives indoors. How many hours per day are spent outside? The dogs are in and out of the house every 2-4 hours in fenced in yard (6 ft. privacy)

Where does the dog sleep? Must be crated when unsupervised and sleeping. Will chew and eat all soft toys/towels/socks etc. – our biggest concern in the house! Had to induce vomiting 3x since taking her in. Would not do well in house with small children due to toys/small clothes.

Is the dog housebroken? Yes (but have had a couple of accidents.)

Is the dog crate-trained? Does not like the crate but no choice.

Where does the dog stay when you are at home? With responsible person or in crate.

Where does the dog stay when you are NOT at home? Crate see above.

What type of fence do you have? Privacy 6’

Does the dog try to escape? If so, please explain – jumping, climbing, digging, etc. NO

Has the dog had any training – no. We have curbed the counter-surfing and jumping on people.

Does the dog know any commands? Sit

How does the dog behave on a leash? All over the place

How does the dog do in the car? All over the place.. we are working hard on sitting in the car to the dog park.

Does the dog have any known phobias, such as thunderstorms, fireworks, strangers, trips to the vet, etc.? None, does GREAT at vet.... very calm, trusting.

Please add any additional comments here:
This is an incredible puppy, if we didn't already have a dog, we would have felt we hit the jack-pot. This dog deserves to be the star she is in someone's home.
