Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Leo is an 9 month old male Border Collie. (we believe he is a purebred BC) Leo is a smooth-coated BC and his ears can't decide which way they are going to stand yet.
Leo came to us from a humane society, and previously was in a home that was not equiped to deal with an active, intelligent BC puppy. Leo did not get consistent training, reinforcement or corrections in his past home; however he is learning quickly that people can be fair. Leo did not seem to get alot of socialization in his previous home. Thankfully Leo doesn't seem to be too damaged by the lack of socalization and training.
Leo is a brilliant puppy. He learns very quickly with operant conditioning and treats, as well as corrections when needed for things like jumping up. Leo is still a puppy and when he gets super excited he will jump up... but he soon remembers that sitting and looking at his person instead of jumping up will earn him attention or a treat. Leo is still a bit of an "alligator" when he takes a treat, but he is learning that he doesn't get a treat, unless he stops grabbing for it.
Leo is catches on to new things VERY quickly. He is quick, so your rewards or corrections must be properly timed. Leo knows sit, down and come. Leo is also learning to wait until being released to take a treat. Obedience classes will be required for Leo's new home, both for him and for his new family. Obedience classes are a great way to bond with a new canine family member too! Leo does not walk well on leash yet. Leo is working on crate training and house training.
Leo is overall a confident puppy, however because of Leo's lack of socialization, he is sometimes unsure of new people. He seems a little more wary of some men. When he is unsure, he will bark at them and sometimes growl. Leo is not aggressive, but he is unsure. We are continuing to work with Leo and he learning that new people are just fine. As Leo is socialized more, he is more confident and now is only occasionally unsure of someone. Leo will warm up to someone he is unsure of with time and patience (we wonder why he is so unsure and a little scared). Leo is learning that his person will take care of him and that people do not mean harm. Leo learned very quickly that making eye contact (without being asked) with his human earns him a reward too. He is a rockstar at sitting and making eye contact!
Leo really enjoys meeting new people - he loves getting treats from strangers. Leo has been great with meeting kids too and will exchange kisses for gentle pets. Leo gets along with other dogs and loves to play. He is pretty appropriate with other dogs, and we have not found a dog yet that he doesn't get along with. Leo doesn't currently have alot of interest in toys, other than chewing on them.
Brilliant Leo is full of energy, so he will need a home that can exercise his mind and body! Leo will make an excellent companion for a person or family who will put the time and energy into training and exercising him. Like any BC puppy, Leo needs rules to follow and will need training.
