My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adoption Fee: $400

Fostered in Mississippi

Age: 3 years

Weight: 9 lbs.

8/2/12 – Hello There! Callie here – sorry I haven’t updated in a while, but I’ve been a bit under the weather. But I’m feeling much better now and Foster Mom (FM) is so glad that I’m not coughing much these days! My last Heartworm treatment was June 15th, and they tell me that once your 6 weeks out, then you should be out of the “danger zone”. Well, I’m 7 weeks out now, so I must be out of the “danger zone” – I feel like I am anyway. I’m feeling much better and I really want to start playing again, but FM says “not yet” – that I have to wait a little while before she’ll feel comfortable letting me play again. But, then again, nobody around here will play with me…the other dogs here are very nice and polite…actually a bit too nice and polite because they won’t run, jump and play with me like I want them to!

Oh well, I guess that’s where you come in…I would really like to have a permanent family and if you had another dog that likes to play that would be PERFECT! I LOVE other dogs – I grew up in the backyard with a bunch of other dogs, so I got real used to being around other dogs. And I was the smallest of the bunch, so I quickly learned my place as well, so you don’t have to worry about me being aggressive or getting angry if your dog wants to be boss or tries to take my food. FM says she’s never seen a dog that is so friendly and accommodating with the other dogs! But that’s just me – your happy-go-lucky hippie-chick kinda gal!

I was really freaked out when I first got here, because I had been in several foster homes before this one and I just wasn’t sure why. So I panicked every time FM would walk out the door – it was really bad and really scary. But FM put me on some meds called “Reconcile” and started going out into the garage for short periods of time and then coming back in just to show me that she was always coming back and it’s worked great! Now, I don’t panic anymore when FM leaves! And I’ve even gotten to the point where I don’t have to stay in one room when FM leaves, because I’ve learned to use the doggie door and go outside to do my business! Sometimes, when the grass is wet (I really don’t like wet grass – I had enough of that when I lived in the backyard!) I will go on the pee pads that FM puts out on the back porch for us.

I’m still on the Reconcile, but FM says as soon as she knows for sure that I’m out of the “danger zone”, then she’s going to take me off the meds. I’ll also be going off the prednisone that I’ve been on since I started the HW treatment. So very soon, I should be drug free!

So all that to say, if you’re looking for a really cool girl to play with your dog, but let him/her keep being the boss of everyone, then look no farther, because I am the perfect one for you! PEACE OUT!

7/6/2012 – Callie had her last heartworm treatment on June 15th and did really good until June 25th, when she started throwing up and having diarrhea – After blood tests revealed that her white blood count and platelets were very low, she spent the night in the Emergency Clinic getting a Canine Plasma IV. She came back home and was doing GREAT until July 1st when she developed a very severe cough. She’s been back to the vet’s office twice since then just to make sure her heart and lungs are functioning okay. (This is foster mom’s first time dealing with HW treatment, so we’re not taking any chances!)

So far, her heart and lungs are functioning normally (well as normal as can be expected with a bunch of worms in there), but her extreme coughing continues. She does have some periods when the coughing is not so bad, but sometimes it can go on for hours without any relief.

Please say extra prayers for this little sweetheart! She is SO sweet - all the workers at the Emergency Clinic and at the Vet’s office have nothing but extreme praise for this little love bug. She LOVES being held and the minute you pick her up, she just “melts” right into your chest – who wouldn’t love that, huh?

6/14/12 - The vet has decided to do a "split protocol" for the second part of Callie's heartworm treatment. She had the 1st of the split today and will go back tomorrow morning for the 2nd part of the split. She's been doing really good with the 1st treatment. But prayers are greatly appreciated since this last part of the treatment targets the more mature more resistant heartworms and the risk of embellism increases. She's doing much better with her anxiety so we're hoping that will decrease the likelihood that she will have any major complications. She is still on Reconcile which has helped immensely with her separation anxiety. She's really coming along with learning her manners and not "freaking out" when I leave her. She's such a sweet goofy little girl - I'm so looking forward to the day she's HW free and can play as much as she wants to!

5/17/12 – Just a quick update to let everyone know that I started my HW treatment today – OUCH! I’m still sore from the injection, but so far I haven’t had any bad side effects. If all goes well, I’ll go back on June 14th and 15th for my second round of treatment. In the meantime, I sure would appreciate your prayers.

4/23/12 - Hey There! Callie Calliat here! Yes, just like Colbie Calliat, the singer…I’m sure we’re related somehow, but poor thing, she got all the talent and I got all the looks!

I’ve been here in Mississippi with my new foster family for 2 weeks now and I’m really getting settled in nicely. I get along great with my foster siblings – they don’t play much though – I’m working on that! But Foster Mom (FM) says I shouldn’t be playing much anyway cause I have something they call heartworms. I don’t know what she’s talking about, my heart feels fine! I really really like my FM – I follow her EVERYWHERE she goes and at first I was really freaked out about it when she left me alone in this big house and went outside. But she keeps coming back, so I’m getting better about letting her go outside and work in the yard some. And when she leaves for work and leaves a bunch of toys filled with treats and peanut butter, I don’t say a word about her leaving! But I still do get really hyper when she comes home from work and I like to jump on her and sometimes I land on the other pups. FM says I have to learn my “manners” – but I’ve never heard of “manners” before, so FM says she’s going to teach them to me. Whatever… I’m sure it can’t be all that hard…

I’m really working hard on not peeing in the house. FM says it’s because I lived in the back yard at my previous owners and I could just go anytime I wanted to. She says I’m too skinny too - I told her it was because I lived with big dogs in the back yard and they ate my food and there wasn’t anything I could do about it. FM says that’s okay – she’ll have me fattened up in no time. She feeds me twice a day and makes sure my foster brother doesn’t come and steal my food. So I get to eat the whole bowl all by myself.

I LOVE cuddling with my human in the big chair FM calls the “man-chair” – and I love sleeping in the bed with FM and the other pups too. FM tells everyone that I just love cuddling up with her, but once I fall asleep, she can move me anywhere in the bed and I’m not waking up and/or moving. Little does she know that I have one eye open just to make sure I’m still in this great place. But I’m not letting on, cause I’m afraid they might make me go sleep in the yard again! But FM keeps telling me that won’t happen, I’m just not taking any chances for now!

Oh, and I’ve learned how to use this really cool thing called a Doggie Door – which means I can go outside and come back in the house anytime I want to – I don’t have to wait for someone to come let me in and I don’t have to worry about them leaving me in the backyard all night any more. Ahhhh – I really like the way they do things around here.

I’m taking an antibiotic now – I’ll be on that for 30 days, then I’ll have my first heartworm treatment. I’ve heard it’s pretty tough treatment, but FM says she’s sure I’ll do just fine though cause I’m so young and will have more meat on my bones by then. But I sure would appreciate your prayers too. I’ll have FM keep you guys posted on my treatment – cause as soon as they find out that the heartworms are gone I’ll be ready to find my perfect forever home – and hopefully it will be one with another dog to play with and a human that likes to cuddle!
