My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I adopted Hayley from a shelter in Missouri when she was a little over a year old. She had been in a number of homes where she was “too active” and having been tried as a hunting dog to no avail was passed on. She had a beebee lodged under the skin of one of her shoulders and I imagine that was at the hands of some wayward children. She was very sweet but very hyper. She did come with some well-learned commands which she has always maintained (sit, lay down, stay).
Over the years, she has developed into the sweetest and most wonderful companion. She is literally my shadow following me from room to room. I have run or walked with her nearly every single day for the last nine years. She loves going on car rides, and trips to parks and hiking, etc. I’ve always look forward to seeing her after a day at work, and make sure I give her plenty of attention when I arrive home.

I had a child, which I was not anticipating when I adopted Hayley. I now have an active toddler who is “invading her personal space”. I have tried everything to make this work and she was fine until he started crawling. She has been growling at him when he got too close for six months now. A month or so ago, she snapped at him a few times, and most recently grabbed his hand and left a purplish wound – she did not break the skin- just another way to warn him.

Hayley is not an aggressive dog and has so many wonderful qualities and she will make a great companion to anyone without children. She still runs 4 miles with me every day, although she is old enough so that a good walk will probably make her happy. She responds well to commands, does not jump on furniture unless invited, is completely housebroken, and completely trustworthy in the house alone (as long as all candles are out of reach!!). She is the sweetest little girl. She is up-to-date on all shots (rabies until 2010) and the vet is constantly amazed at how healthy she is (he always asks if I’m sure she is really 9 years old). She likes baths, is great in the car, GREAT WITH CATS, and good with other dogs once she has introduced herself.

History
Hayley would be a great companion for an older couple with no grandchildren or a single mom or dad looking for an active dog, who would be just as happy curled up with you. Because of Hayley’s history, applicants should be fully aware of these issues and feel free to discuss them with the contact on this
