Here's what the humans have to say about me:
I believe in being very forthright in my descriptions of the Poms in my care. Let me tell you what I would want to know if I was considering adopting Wilbur. Then if you are still interested, email us and I can send you a questionnaire to fill out.
Wilbur was with an old, sick man for quite a long time that neglected and abused him horribly. When the man was taken from his home by ambulance, animal control was called. Wilbur looked almost unrecognizable as a dog. His coat had become a huge hardened shell. It was even hard for him to turn his head. He had been beaten or kicked, especially around his rear area. Who knows when he had eaten last. The Animal Control officers took him to animal control where he was put in a holding area. No one even noticed him for a few days until a volunteer walked through the back and saw his little body laying in a corner with his nose stuck as far in the corner as it could go. She was horrified and snapped a pic. I was sent the pic and I knew we had to help. The AC officers had felt sorry for him, so they had taken clippers and shaved his hair-shell off. So most of the hair and critters hiding in it was left back at the shelter. That was a good break for me! When I got him home, I bathed, dewormed and fed him. He was actually grinning from ear to ear. Gone was the helpless, hopeless look. It has been uphill from there. He is neutered, been Heart Worm tested Neg, is on HW prevention, had all his vaccines, had a chest xray and is on 1/2 pill of Enalipril, a tiny bit of Lasix, for a slightly enlarged heart, and a thyroid pill once a day. He appears to be mostly deaf but can hear me clap and that is how I call him. His fur is new and soft like puppy fur.
He sleeps in his own bed, beside my bed. Sometimes he might just stand in front of the door and he does not like to be pushed, or nudged around his rear. His reaction is air 'snap snaps' Always two. Go figure? If he thinks someone is going to pick him up around his middle, it is the same reaction, but stronger- like he means it. He does not like to be picked up, except in a certain way. He enjoys walking on a leash and does it well- smiling the whole time. He is what I call an 'easy keeper'. He is not needy or pushy. He seems to tolerate the other dogs, but does not act like he really needs them to be happy. He loves to be petted and loved on, but I would not trust kids around him. He has a full set of teeth and after all the abuse he has seen, I think he might try to protect himself if he was cornered and tugged on by children. It will break your heart to see how he will duck and close his eyes waiting to be hit. He is gaining confidence, but he has been though a lot.
He wears a belly band in the house. He goes outside several times a day, and each time I put it back on when he comes in, or he would be marking. He has never pooped in the house.
Ok- that is pretty much the good, bad and the ugly. If I haven't scared you off, email back and I will send you the questionnaire. PomrescueCom@aol.com
