4/22/2007 - Update: Mr. Magoo is now comfortable in his foster home and we've learned the secret to him loving all sexes - FETCH! As long as when you enter the house, you throw a toy, you'll be in his good graces. What we haven't figured out yet is his housebreaking...he signals to go out, we bring him out, and he doesn't do potty? Odd. But, it does show he knows what to do when he needs to go - we just have to focus him on what needs to be done outside. Nothing some diligence won't help, so don't let that sway you away! Mr. Magoo also has started to play with the other dogs in the house and has burned off some of his little extra weight. He'll likely be good at around 20 lbs.
4/5/2007 - Update: Mr. Magoo is now out and about, but still is cautious of the female humans in the home and will give a low growl when they try to come near. He is, however, loving the male humans in the home and even knows how to fetch!!! The foster dad gave Mr. Magoo a bath with no problems and even allowed him to brush his beautiful coat. He is still good with the other dogs in the home, as long as they don't go is his crate where his toys are. His potty skills are slow - he wants to go outside and do them, he goes outside, but forgets why he's there! It may be part of his fears - so we will keep trying to remind him where his business belongs!
From Wikipedia - Mr. Magoo is a wealthy, short-statured retiree who gets into a series of sticky situations as a result of his nearsightedness, compounded by his stubborn refusal to admit the problem, in which the affected people (or animals) think that he is a lunatic, rather than just being near-sighted. Now doesn't that sound like many dachshunds you've met?! :) Our Mr. Magoo is not a retiree (he's 1.5 years old), not near-sighted (he's healthy, UTD on his shots, and neutered), but he is a "short-statured", red with a black overlay longhaired dachshund who is looking for a new forever home to love him while he shows them the wealth of owning a dachshund! We will update his profile as we learn more - but this is what we know so far: Mr. Magoo came to CCDR as his former family felt they didn't have enough time for him and a dog walker wasn't an option. He is very scared right now, but is slowly starting to come out of his shell and is finding himself trusting the other dogs in his foster home more so than the people. He is somewhat housebroken, will go in a crate but will whine, and is warming up quicker to the man in the house. Mr. Magoo is looking for a home as an only dog or possibly with one other gentle playmate, with older children who know how to treat a pet, and probably one without cats (he chases them, but doesn't hurt them). All he needs you to do is complete an online application and he just may be yours to keep! Based on his shy personality and the anxiety he's displaying in the short ride/transition from CT to MA - Mr. Magoo is looking for a New England home to call his own. Please send me an Email for additional information, pictures, and any up to the moment updates in his personality. Mr. Magoo's adoption fee is $250.00.
