Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Noel is a sweet little dalmatian mix. Some even guess she could have a little cattle dog in her. We estimate her to be just under 1 year old. She weighs in around 40lbs full grown. She was originally adopted from animal control only later to be found listed on Craiglist "free to good home." Since we had rescued several of her siblings we couldn't let her simply be passed around so we called and offered to bring her into our rescue. After getting her we realized she was completely deaf. This made us even more thankful for rescuing her since she probably would have been passed around and around since many people do not understand the needs of a hearing impaired dog.
If you are interested but have concerns adopting a deaf dog we would be more than happy to talk to you about it. I think once people meet her and see her great personality they'll be happy to do the little extra work that will be required to own a deaf dog.
This is from her new foster family:
My husband and I adopted a dog, Peanut, in Dec. Peanut and Noel quickly became friends at Pawtropolis. We started training Peanut with hand signals as well as verbal cues. When we found out that Noel was deaf, I thought we could help her learn hand signals too. Noel has been coming to our home for several weeks now. She is very food motivated which helps in her training. Noel knows how to sit, lie down, come and stay with hand signals. She will "stay" for a while with that hand command and we are working on her staying in place for longer periods of time. She showed a little food aggression when she first ate next to Peanut, but now they eat side by side with no problems. She is the perfect little lady now.
We have also been working with hand feeding for about half of each meal. We use a "thumbs up" as her "ok" cue to release her to eat. This teaches her to focus of the feeder and remain calm before being fed. She is doing great with this. The "ok" cue is also used before she can exit any exterior doors. So, she has learned to make eye contact and has to see the cue before going outside. Noel is very socialized to dogs at Pawtropolis, but not so comfortable around lots of people. I slowly started taking her to different places to get her used to being around people. Now, she even approaches people on her own. She has been to pet stores, multiple dog parks, the car wash, and even my nephew's soccer games. Noel does great around our niece and nephew. She will even follow the hand commands from them.
Noel has lots of energy and loves to run. She is very fast. So, she and Peanut play in our yard often. However, she is very calm in the house. She knows not to get on the furniture and has not tried to mess up anything in the house. She did have a few potty accidents in the beginning, but she is housetrained now. Noel walks like a lady on her new Gentle Leader. Now, that she no longer pulls on walks and is learning to stay on one side, I think she would make a great running partner.
In the evening, Noel usually makes her way to her crate before we ever tell her it is bed time. When she is tired, she will make her way to bed and curl up for the night. She is a precious dog and deserves a loving forever home.
