Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Nellie is a tiny 3 year old beagle girl. At only 15 pounds, people always mistaken her for a puppy. Nellie can have her puppy-like moments, but she is a docile, calm, and quiet girl. Nellie is quiet in her crate for bedtime yet loves to snuggle with us on the couch before bedtime. She likes to have her head resting on a body part. Nellie does not jump up on the furniture on her own though. She only comes up when we bring her up for some snuggle time. She can be Nosy Nellie and has to follow whoever gets up. Even though she will awake from a sleep to follow a moving family member, she would not make a good watch dog. We have yet to hear her bark.
Nellie is a bit different from most dogs in some of her mannerisms because she has lived her first 3 years of life in a cage. She is retired from a research lab. when she is held, she remains still but not stiff. She is curious and likes to sniff eyes and sometimes give tiny kisses on the eyelid. She certainly knows the joy of human affection, but can be Nervous Nellie in new situations. Meeting strangers while on a walk will cause her to tuck her tail and pull away. Yet she seeks out affection in the house. At this point in time she is afraid of children. But as we have seen with everything else, she would most likely overcome her uncertainty with time. Afterall, we have only met children while on walks. Watching her blossom and learn about new things has been a joy. She may skittle away from something at first, then she comes back to check it out, bringing a smile to our faces. While she waits for you, we will continue to introduce her to the world.
Nellie actually arrived and has been in her foster home with one of her cage mates, Laura. Nellie always lets Laura have her way. Nellie never argues with anyone. She endures quite a bit from Laura. Watch her video and you will see. We think Nellie would like to be adopted into a home of her own or with another dog not quite as eager to be her boss or "special friend". It seems dogs tend to find her ... ummm "attractive". This "attraction" is due to her docile nature. Nellie handles this with grace and simply sits down. She does like to play with other small dogs. She would be fine with cats too. But give her a leaf pile, and watch out! She loves burrowing in leaves. She can be so funny!
Sometimes dogs who have been living in a cage have a hard time potty training. It is hard to learn to pee in the grass when grass is something brand new to you and tickles. Nellie got the hang of taking care of business in the yard in her first week with us. Then she mastered the art of holding it and not doing her business inside. Oh, and while she was learning that important toileting stuff, she also learned to sit and come on command and to walk on a leash. She has even pottied while on a walk. She is now ready for adoption.
