Here's what the humans have to say about me:
MERLIN - 1 year old brindle male with natural ears. Merlin came to rescue from a shelter. He is currently in a foster home with other Great Danes as well as smaller dogs. He is very good with all the dogs that are nice to him. He likes to play with the other young male Dane in the home, which is good for both of them because tired puppies are good puppies! He has had a harder time with the older Danes who are teaching him some doggie manners. He has been in his foster home for three weeks now and he is a sweet, happy and affectionate boy. It's pretty clear he hasn't had much socialization in his short life and was bounced around a lot. He was very scared of the Vet when he was taken in for an exam, and he barks very aggressively when visitors come to the house. He hasn't had any obedience training and needs to learn how to behave and walk on a leash. Merlin needs a home were he is socialized and taught to trust people. A dane savvy home is a must. Merlin came to us with kennel cough, dry skin, and 20 pounds underweight. He is recovering nicely, but still needs a few more weeks to build up his strength before he'll be ready to move on to his permanent home. Merlin came to MAGDRL in February 2007.
Update 3/24/07 - Merlin is doing great! He has put on weight, his coat is full & shinny, he looks very fit and healthy. He could move on to his "forever" home any time now. He gets along with all the little and medium size dogs here and is great with all but one of our Danes (but that is the fault of the other Dane, Gandalf has a bad back and is afraid of Merlin's playfulness) and he's cat safe. He doesn't like strangers or strange places, so he will need a Dane savvy owner willing to introduce him slowly to new people & places. His personality is wonderful! He is smart, eager to please, loving and playful. He doesn't have the puppy crazies. He'll hang out and relax most of the time, he likes his crate at night and a couch during the day. He's house trained, but will need leash training. Merlin is going to make someone a wonderful companion.
Update 10/4/07 - Merlin is living with a pack of large male dogs and is doing wonderful. Dixie the alpha Dane is the only large female and he's fine with her and the small toy size females in the home. Merlin prefers the company of other males then he does females. His fosters parents said he's very good and that they can take anything out of his mouth and put their hands into his bowl when he's eating.
Update 10/21/07 - It turns out that we think Merlin would do best as an only dog as he selective with the other dogs he meets.
Update 1/6/08 - When he came to MAGDRL from a shelter on 2/7/07, he was only 13 months old. He is was in a foster home with other Great Danes as well as smaller dogs. There he did well with all the other dogs as long as they did not get into his face. He did prefer males over females. Due to personal reasons, the foster home could no longer keep Merlin and he had to be moved to the kennel. Initially he was fearful and shy, but came around quickly and has settled in. He loves to go out into the play yard and chase and carry around his toys. He loves Kathy and greets her with lots of wiggles and endless dane leans. Even though Merlin was great with other dogs, we feel he would do best in a quiet home with no other pets and older or no children. This boy would greatly benefit from an obedience class or agility as he is a very good jumper and very agile. He also needs to get out into the world and meet new things and people. Merlin requires a 6' fence and someone that has experience with danes and their idiosyncrasies. He loves to run and play and needs a daily outlet for his energy.
