Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Arrival Story: Sadly for Tucker, his family brought him to a rural shelter because they were moving and could not bring him along. He ended up in the "system" due to no fault of his own. It was quickly discovered he had a horrible case of fleas (for which he has been treated) and his toenails were so long that a few of them had grown into the pad of his paw and one toe was infected because of this.
Age / Weight: Tucker is five (5) years old and weighs 21 pounds.
Personality Description: Tucker has an excellent disposition and is getting along with all the dogs in his foster home perfectly. He sleeps on a dog bed in his foster family's bedroom at night. Tucker has been seen by a vet recently and it was determined he has a herniated umbilical cord, but this is nothing of concern per the vet. He also has cataracts (one eye worse than the other). However, Tucker still has plenty of vision left and the vet thinks his cataracts could actually be genetic in nature. Tucker seems to get along just fine though and even years down the road will continue to do so with the help of his new family, any canine co-companions in his new home, and his own sense of smell and sound. The vet indicated Tucker is not really a "special needs" kind of dog ... just needs someone who will love and understand him, despite his minor flaws. The vet thought he had an excellent disposition. Tucker was so tolerable of his vet visit whereat he had to undergo an exhausting nail trim, shots, and shaving of heavy mats from between his toes.
Ideal Forever Home: It is believed Tucker will fit into a variety of situations quite well. He gets along with everyone and is so eager to please. His little tail never stops wagging and wags especially fast when you call his name or talk to him.
It should be noted that cocker spaniels have long, pendulous ears and are more predisposed to ear problems than some other breeds. The fold of the ear can prevent air from entering, and it also creates a warm, moist environment where organisms can grow. If you never do the preventive maintenance required, a cocker could get such serious ear infections that his hearing could be threatened. Left untreated, ear infections can get out of hand and surgery can be required. However, if you're willing to do the work to keep the hair trimmed around the ear canal area, and if you use a good ear cleaner on a weekly basis, you can prevent ear infections.
