Some dogs fare better than others in a shelter environment and Dakota was not doing well at all. He was a dog that probably would have not made it to the adoption floor or into another rescue as he was very shy and scared. His behavior could have very easily been mistaken for something else, but luckily we are aware that the shelter is a very scary and confusing place for these dogs and a little coaxing out of the cage and some TLC can go a long way. We succeeded in seeing through his terrified exterior, busted the little guy out, and Dakota never looked back!
Dakota’s demeanor has done a complete 180 degree turn since he was transferred from ACC. He was once a cowering dog who was scared of everything – but a confident and playful dog has taken his place, and we couldn’t be happier! Dakota was fortunate to land in a great foster home where his dedicated foster parents have worked with him and exposed him to just about everything – through his foster parents, we’ve discovered that Dakota is great with all other dogs and has even met some cats on good terms! His experiences with children big and small have all been positive thus far, and Dakota has shown a great love for playing at the dog park and running for miles with his foster mom. His fetch skills are unparalleled and he’d be a great family dog!
Dakota and his brother Finch were owner give-ups through no fault of their own. It's hard to believe anyone would want to relinquish these sweet, sweet boys. While searching for new dogs in the rescue pavilion we first came across Finch. What was so sad is that his brother was all the way on the opposite side of the room. We had no idea that Finch even had a brother. As fate would have it, Dakota was picked and chosen to be part of the intake group. We didn't find out until the next day (while looking through their paperwork) that the two were even related! We were so thrilled to have discovered that their journey came full circle and the two boys were back together. It was a bittersweet and touching moment for us all!
Dakota is crate- and house-trained, and he is currently learning basic obedience commands in NLOL’s School’s for the Dogs obedience program. If you are interested in more information or would like to meet Dakota, please contact us today!
