Here's what the humans have to say about me:
I didn't intend to leave animal control with 7 new fosters, but on this particular day I couldn't leave them. We walked in to visit with another dog on their website. That dog wasn't available to visit so we walked around to see the others. We wrote down the pen numbers of several dogs we had seen that caught our interest. We took the numbers back to the animal control officer to get more details. Normally we'll be told that some have applications, some have a few more days, some have rescues coming, etc. On this day every single dog we asked about was going to be put to sleep in the morning. It was 30 minutes before closing. These dogs were going to die.
I'm sure you know that tons of dogs get killed every year at animal controls. What you might not know is that there are adorable, wonderful, great, young, sweet, submissive, "highly adoptable" dogs that are killed all the time. Every dog that we asked about we knew they would make wonderful pets. Why in the world are dogs like these being killed? It just isn't fair. I can't change everything but I was determined to save the lives of the 7 dogs on our list. Jade was one of them.
Even though Jade is still a puppy (we're guessing around 10 months) we're pretty sure she is full grown. She's a tiny girl. She literally looks like a miniature black labrador. We're listing her as beagle (to give the size and ears) lab mix. Though what she is we don't know. She weighs about 15lbs.
Jade is your typical wiggly puppy. She loves playing with all of her foster siblings, and gets along with both large and small dogs (she lives with dogs in all sizes, from a chihuahua to a husky!). She is a little unsure at times when a dogs bigger than her try to greet her right up in her face, but quickly warms up to them with a little persuasion. Then, she can romp and roll with everybody. After Jade gets tired, she will curl up on her doggy bed on the floor, or, if her foster Mom will get down with her, she LOVES to cuddle J. The one word we could always use to describe Jade is “sweet.” Even when she was at the vet getting her vaccinations, she was curling up in the vet techs’ laps and causing them to fall in love with her!
At home, Jade and her foster mom are working on hand feeding, as well as the commands “sit” and “wait.” She is learning quickly, and her exuberance always has her foster mom giggling as they work on new tricks. She is highly food motivated, and fun to work with because of it! When she gets treats or food, she does a bouncy happy dance all across the kitchen. She is already crate trained, and can go all night without needing to go potty. When she wakes up in the morning, she will give a soft whimper to remind her foster mom that she needs to go outside, but other than that she doesn’t whine unless she is crated and her friends are all loose. She actually enjoys her crate, and will continue to do so as long as she gets a little treat each time she goes up. Speaking of potty training, Jade had a couple of accidents when she very first went to her foster home, but she has been almost impeccable since then! Her foster mom has been very diligent about either letting her outside with regularity or crating her, so she may not be 100% yet, but she is doing very, very well.
Because she is in the middle of some big changes in her life, she is a little uncertain about new things. Walking on a busier street with cars passing, car rides, and going in to new places are a little unsettling to her right now. However, so was the screen door the first couple of days in her foster home; now, she bursts through the door, happily following her siblings outside to potty. Hopefully after Miss Jade starts playing with others in daycare and gets used to her surroundings, she will learn that the car takes her to fun places, and that new places are not always so scary!
