Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Iris is a 3 year-old, female, purebred Golden Retriever who came to GRFR from a puppy mill in Missouri. Iris has probably had quite a few litters in her three short years. Now is her time to relax and be a precious member of a loving and patient family! Like all Goldens, she will need regular checkups, including a cardiac check-up in 2 years. You see she has been diagnosed by GRFR's cardiologist with a congenital heart murmur and a very mild case of subaortic stenosis. GRFR's veterinary cardiologist has told us that she does not need any restriction on her activities and should live a normal and healthy life.
Because Iris lived all of her life in a puppy mill until GRFR stepped up, she has typical puppy mill baggage to unpack with your help and the help of a doggy sibling. For example she is learning to trust people and to understand that there are good people, like you. When Iris first arrived at her foster home, she was overwhelmed with new things such as doors, having a roof over her head, going potty outside, eating out of bowls, walking on a leash, climbing stairs . . . you get the picture. Well, Iris is a smart, brave and optimistic little girl and she has made incredible progress!! Now, she is fine already with doors, the roof over her head, food bowls, loves to go on walks with her foster siblings, uses stairs with no problem and is house trained too. She has even learned to trust her foster parents enough to take treats from their hands!
You will see, Iris is coming out of her shell! She has started to play with her foster siblings, even though they're almost twice her size - a petite -- 40 lbs. She loves her stuffed animal "babies" and piles them all on her bed and lies down next to them. Rope toys are another of her favorites and she loves whipping them up in the air and trying to catch them. Who knew toys could be so much fun?!
Iris gets along well with all 3 cats in the foster home. Iris has not been around children much yet. Because she is still very skittish around loud noises and sudden movements, Iris is recommended to go to a predictable and quiet home with adults, and perhaps, dog savvy children 8 or older. Most importantly, Iris needs a forever family with a patient, confident younger doggy sibling who will show her all about family life and the new and wonderful world of being a beloved family Golden.
Iris's loving foster family says Iris is a diamond in the rough and her forever family will need to love her with patience and dedication to bring out her inner beauty. Is that you? To find out more about the "gorgeous little one," please apply online today and our volunteers will be in touch. Iris will be waiting for you with her beaming smile and wagging tail.
