Update 2/5/12: Meet Romeo, a very special boy!
Romeo is a 6 lb, 7 year old Chihuahua in search of a home to call his very own. He was rescued by volunteers from a local kill shelter where his owner abandoned him. Romeo is currently residing in a foster home with a rescue volunteer.
Romeo has been under our rescue for 7 months now. We won't sugar-coat it, he has 'emotional baggage' and needs a special person to come along who can handle that. He is not for the faint of heart.
Romeo is fearful of new people and new situations. He will shake, bark, try to retreat, etc. If he feels threatened/cornered he will bite. He is only 6 lbs, so he can't do much damage, but most people aren't tolerant of this kind of behavior while his trust builds up.
Romeo's foster mom has been working with him for 7 months and he has come a very long way in that time. She recommends Romeo go to a very experienced dog home with a lot of patience. Romeo needs you to build up trust with him. It will not take a week or two, so please understand that before considering adopting him.
With those that Romeo lives with right now, he is a different dog. Everyone in the house thinks he is wonderful. He loves to sleep under the covers at night (he isn't enjoying the cold weather -- brrr!). He loves to go for walks and car rides and also play with this tiny stuffed animals. Romeo has so much potential, if someone would just give him a chance.
Romeo gets along with kitties and other dogs. He is uncomfortable around dogs that are very excitable, but he is able to acclimate.
On occasion Romeo has accidents in the house. You just need to make sure he goes out frequently (he won't tell you when he needs to go, and he has a tiny, tiny bladder!). If he does have an accident, he's tiny and so there isn't all that much to clean up. Romeo is territorial and if you bring new animals into the house, he may exhibit marking behavior.
Romeo is one of those rescue dogs that just steals your heart when you meet him. His foster mom has had many visitors over to the house and even those that say they aren't 'small dog people' fall in love with him. There is something about him that just tugs at your heartstrings.
Unfortunately, there have only been a couple of people that have come to visit him or try to adopt him in the past 7 months. They ultimately felt they couldn't deal with his behavioral/training needs.
If you think you are a person who can take on the task of our sweet Romeo, please contact us right away. We have training techniques we can go over with you and will ensure we come up with a good plan to transition him to your home.

Please note that we
do not ship animals or do same-day adoptions. Additionally, we ordinarily limit adoptions to homes within CT or no more than an hour or so drive from Hartford, CT in order to be able to conduct a home visit and provide follow-up assistance when necessary. Exceptions are considered on a case-by-case basis.
We try to make our adoption process as
easy and painless as possible, but please understand where we are coming from and all of the work that goes into rescuing and rehoming homeless animals. We don't want them to go through this again. Visit
www.sadiemaefoundation.org to learn about the adoption process in detail.
If you are not in a position to adopt a pet that tugs at your heart strings, consider
