My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Shiner came to MSR from Missouri, where he survived the tornadoes. He isn't a full Sheltie; he could have some Aussie or Border Collie in his heredity, but he is 100% delightful! Despite the changes in his life, he is one happy galoot!

AGE: 10 months (birthdate in October)
SIZE: About 20” and 35 lbs.; he's at an ideal weight, lean and muscular.
TEMPERAMENT: Shiner is a bit shy at first, but he quickly adjusted to our home and routine. He is active and playful. He loves walks and he will come up to his people often for love and attention.
FENCE: Shiner will chase squirrels and rabbits, so a fenced yard (secure wood or chain link fence) is important so he can run freely in a safe environment. He readily goes in and out of the house.
DOGS: Shiner gets along well with our male and female Shelties, and loves to play. He would prefer to go to a home with a playful canine friend, though a home without one will be considered if the adopter has time to play and train with Shiner, and if he has opportunities for playtimes with other dogs.
CATS: Unknown, no cats in our home, though Shiner reportedly was reactive to cats in a previous environment, so we are looking for a cat-free home for him.
KIDS: Unknown, no kids in his foster home, though he reportedly did well with children in his previous home.
CRATE TRAINED: Shiner readily goes into his crate when lured by a treat. We crate him during the day for his safety while we are at work, no problems noted. He is happy to come out when we get home. We have left him out in the house for an hour or two while we were away without any problem. He is still a puppy and will chew occasionally; we hide shoes and provide chew toys so this has been only a minor issue.
HOUSETRAINED: Yes. He also will potty on leash while walking.
OBEDIENCE TRAINING: Shiner completed Puppy Kindergarten. He is very intelligent and learns routines quickly. He has already picked up some simple commands. He would respond well to formal training, and his new family is encouraged to continue with training so he can grow up to be a well-behaved boy.
LEASH MANNERS: Shiner loves walks and is always eager to go. He has not yet been trained to heel, but he walks along with you readily.
CAR RIDES: Shiner rides well in a crate in the car, though with limited experience and short trips only (except his transport to MNSR).
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Somewhat high. Shiner loves to run and play, and is happier once he has had his exercise. He would prefer an active home with opportunities for physical exercise several times per day.
BARKING: Moderate. Shiner barks when other dogs bark, but neither excessicely or exceedingly long.

Shiner is in best harmony when he has had activity and attention. He is not a dog to be left on his own. He wants to do things with his people. Shiner has a very striking appearance and he is a most pleasant dog. He will fit into your home routine quickly, and adapt to you well. He plays with other dogs, he is curious and loves to explore wherever he may be. If he is given exercise and attention, he would be perfect for active families (with or without children) whether as an “only” dog or with a companion. He is just a cool dude!

For more information on our adoption process (which includes an application, references and a home visit prior to meeting dogs) or to see other Shelties available for adoption, please visit our website at www.mnsheltierescue.org, or contact us for the adoption application. Shiner's adoption fee is $300.00, and he is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and on heartworm preventative (during heartworm season), is microchipped, has been bathed and brushed, etc. All of our dogs are indoor dogs and are not to be left outside unattended (not even in a fenced yard, if the adopter is not at home).
