Here's what the humans have to say about me:
I want to tell you, this dog is amazing.
I get so many compliments on how well behaved she is.
People stop me in the park to admire her, little children ask to pet
her and visitors to my home are envious at her manners. She is
astonishing with little kids.
Honestly, she makes me look like a dog whisperer.
All those “bad dog” behaviors...not this one.
Princess:
refuses to get on the bed or furniture, even when commanded.
seldom barks (except at men she hasn’t seen before)
almost never jumps up on me or guests
doesn’t lick/kiss faces or mouths or clean off kids faces
is NOT a lapdog
walks nicely on a leash. I can hold the leash with one finger.
does not nip when she runs and plays
doesn’t hang her head out the car window like a fool
was trained not to go upstairs in a house (I retrained her, it took
days).
I cannot express how amazing having a dog that comes instantly when
called, EVERY TIME. This is a miracle.
Princess stays by my side. This means I have to stay in the kitchen
while she eats (she would rather starve and be with me than eat alone).
She is calm, confident and very intelligent. She retrieves balls and
toys inside the house but not outside. She knows her toys. Lots of
funny stories I can share!
She thrives on activity happening around her and needs human
companionship like other dogs need air/water/food. She doesn’t require
enormous amounts of exercise to stay happy and balanced (there are some
breeds that do!) but she has to be walked before she “goes”--I can’t
just let her out the door in the morning. The distance would be the
equivalent of 2 city blocks 3 times a day. We walk about 2 miles a day
in an effort to regain a normal body weight and muscle tone (she
suffered from years of overfeeding and became obese). I feed her a
strick diet, measuring her portions and am proud to report she is very
close to an ideal weight. The regular diet fed at the same time also
regulates her bowel movements making us both happier.
I have a large yard that adjoins a park. She is unleashed most of the
day and right by my side, inside-outside-upstairs-basement-attic-garage
she is like a shadow. Sometimes I tell her I will be right back and she
understands and waits. Crazy smart.
I use a simple leash to tie her out while mowing the lawn. She never
lunges or acts crazy. She understands what I am doing and knows “this
too shall pass.”
Other dogs are of tremendous interest to Princess and this is not
always a good thing. The good news is she doesn’t bark at them. If
one passes while she is tied out when I mow she stands and stares
intently. She’s smart...whats the point in lunging and acting goofy?
But if we are out walking in the park she tugs at the leash. As I say
her name, in reprimand, she stops briefly but resumes, she is so intent
on the other dog. And its only certain dogs, not every dog. If I see
the other dog first we reroute staying 20 feet or more away and I
pretend the other dog isn’t there. Then the walk proceeds smoothly.
Early in our relationship, there were a few rare occasions were she
left my yard to check out another dog. She’s like a ninja dog, swift
and soundless, one minute she was there, the next gone..I didn’t know
until the workman I was talking to pointed it out. In one instance,
she quarreled with the dog. I don’t know if she would be a dog park
kind of dog. There could be one explanation. Early on, because the park
adjoins my yard, I let her off the leash at 6 am and at 10 pm (the
place is always deserted). I believe Princess thought dogs being
walked in the park during the day were in HER YARD. She has figured
things out now, but after the dog quarrel I keep her on a leash if I am
not watching her 110% of the time.
She thinks about chasing cats, rabbits and squirrels and I forbid her
to do this, for fear she will chase one across a road. If I see them
first I can tell her, “no” (this is where the watching 110% comes in).
I can tell what she is thinking by watching her ears and body language.
Sometimes she sees something first and I tell her “no” without knowing
what it is.
She would enjoy a house with a cat HOWEVER, I don’t know if the cat
would enjoy a house with Princess. It would have to be the right cat
or maybe a kitten Princess raised.
I think she would torment a cat nonstop, smelling its butt, charging it
every time it walks across the room, treeing it. She loves the chase.
Princess is so engaging and gives so much love and devotion you feel
like a Dog God. She is so human centered you never feel lonely when
she is around.:)
