Haku came to MSIR via Animal Control -- someone left him in the overnight kennel -- so we donÂt know anything about his previous life, but he has a wonderful temperament and will make a great family dog.
Haku was kenneled at AC with another dog, and is currently being fostered with two dogs, both of whom he ignores. Ours are a lot older than Haku (about a decade!), so he may be more playful with a younger dog, but he would also be happy as an only dog, as he really enjoys people the most. Haku is unreliable with the cat in the foster home, as he likes to chase him too much. Haku is very prey-driven in the fenced backyard, chirping to and chasing the squirrels.
Haku is also being fostered in a household with two young children -- and he does very well with them. He is calm around high-spirited antics and noises, and allows the kids to pet him easily and frequently. Having said that, Haku is still a Shiba, so interaction with young kids needs to be supervised. He would be very happy though in a family setting.
Haku is completely house-trained, walks well on a leash (although heÂs excited at first), and is quiet in or out of a crate, when left alone. However, if he hears you moving around in another room, he may whine. He does not chew on inappropriate things, and doesnÂt appear motivated by toys. While he is not a counter-surfer, heÂs clearly interested in people food during dinnertime, but weÂre working on his learning good manners. Like many Shibas, he is a door-bolter -- and is fast and frisky when off-leash in the backyard! But again, he enjoys a good neck-rub even more.

NOTE: DUE TO THE BREED'S INDEPENDENT NATURE, SHIBAS SHOULD ALWAYS BE LEASHED WHENEVER THEY ARE OUTSIDE OF A SECURELY FENCED AREA. IN ADDITION, MANY SHIBAS ARE DOOR BOLTERS AND CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN AROUND DOORS AND OTHER ESCAPE POINTS.
