My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

5-11-11: McGee is safe in foster care and having a BLAST!! He is one of the COOLEST dogs ever! Check out his recent photo shoot on Facebook . I was actually using a cat feather toy to get him to leap into the air--FUN!! McGee would bring so many years of joy to an outgoing family and he certainly deserves a permanent loving home.

Due to a family issue, McGee is coming back to IBR. This is what his adopted dad sent me in an email recently : >br>
"Hello Lisa ,

It is Friend Chris Neal. I was the one that adopted McGee from your great organization about nine months ago.

Two years ago , our family with two young boys had lost our 8 year old Boxer named Ty to cancer. I always said that I wanted another dog to replace the companionship I had with Ty. A year went by and we got a small dog ( how I agreed to this I don't know) ... and I still wanted a dog that I was comfortable with and could be my "pup" . Then we ran across your IBR ! We me you and immediatly were introduced to and grown to understand the Bird dog breeds . Soon after , we were paired up with a setter mix named McGee , which we immediately fell in love with from sight and a meeting with Steve from Iowa!!

McGee is an incredible companion ! So healthy unlike so many other unfortunate IBR pups . He is great in every way ! He is great with out 5 and 9 year olds , great with the little Italian greyhound we have ( they sleep on each other and play like two big dogs) . McGee has NO food aggressions , toy aggressions and is just the most playfull and snuggly warm dog I have EVER known !!! He is a little," paws" on with us sometimes " but not from aggression at all just attention , which doesn't always go good for my 5 year old , yet with a stern command of OFF he is down . He is never been hit , never bitten , and never chewed a thing other than toys. He loves the outdoors , loves his daily walks , which now I can let him off leash and when I call for him he stays by my side . He listens to everything I command to him , and he is crate trained to where if we are in the basement watching T.V. and I say " McGee time to go nite-night or go to sleep" he immediatly runs up the the second floor and awaits for me to shut the door for him to sleep for the night .

Lisa ..........he really is the perfect dog !! I am just miserable right now ...
My family and I are going through some really trying times right now . Relationship wise as well as financial stresses making our lives very stressed. I still work for the fire department right now and am about to take on multiple jobs .

I have had to think VERY long and hard about so very difficult decisions for our family lately. I love McGee dearly and I'll be the first one that will be breaking down if we have to bring him back to the IBR for help. But , I just think as a family right now we cannot go on the way we are and have to make changes that will affect McGee as well. With our new schedules we would be taking his out in the morning from his crate to eat , play for a bit , and potty , then his would be back in the crate for a long , long day which isn't fair to any family companion almost each day . We just will not have the same household and lifestyle as we had when we rescued him last spring. I just can't do this to a great dog that needs more and for my family right now ... we need to simplify things or we will continue down a path that my wife and Iare scared that is already happening to us .

I hope that you can understand , and know that I am really hurting to give up the one that has always been by my side and is soo loving . I do not know what steps to take within this process , but have already discussed this with my two boys over the last two weeks . They were/are so hurt by my decisions and have become more understanding . We really hope that McGee can be placed into a similar loving home , I can give the best statements out there regarding this dog . I love him dearly yet have to make one of my toughest decisions ever to lose another that I have bonded with .

Please let me know what I can do for you to make this easier on your end as I know the contract stated we have to notify the IBR frist and formost if we would need to surrender a pet.

Thanks for ALL YOU DO and have done for us and other pets .
I hope someday can be phoning IBR again !
Respectfully submitted , Chris Neal "

CUTE CUTE CUTE!!! McGee is a very handsome 16-18 month old Pointer/ Setter/Pointsettier that had found his way into the local shelter in Dodge City Kansas. He was slated for euthanasia- but many IBR volunteers pulled together to save his life. He arrived into foster care giving lots of Pointer hugs on 1-3-09. He is going to make a wonderful pet---soooo sweet!!!

UPDATE 1-06-09 from his new foster family McGee entered IBR foster care January 3 as a stray from Southwestern Kansas. McGee is a pup, and curious as can be. He is housebroken and crate trained. He loves his crate, we tap on the top of it and he lays right on his cozy blanket. He is quite all night. McGee gets along great with my three kids ages 6, 10, 13 and loves to cuddle. If I let him he would stay all night with my 6 year old in his double bed. McGee makes his own fun, he plays with his stuffed toys and tosses them up in the air and then bounces on it. He gets along just fine with my female pointer, he play bows to her constantly. He would do great with another dog in the house. He is a joy to have in the house, loves to growl at himself in the reflections in the fireplace glass. He does have to work on his puppy manners, he tends to counter surf, but a firm no makes him remember. We are working on sit, and is starting to wait at the door when he needs his feet wiped before coming in from the wet grass. He is really a good dog with a shiny coat and long legs. If you are interested in him please fill out an application. --The West's

Due to the fact that these dogs have come from shelters or abuse or neglect situations, and unless we have tested these dogs on upland birds and feel they are confident and ready to work as a hunter with families where they will be trained with kindness and patience, we will only adopt to pet homes.

All adoptions include vaccinations, deworming, microchips, spaying or neutering, collar, leash and an information adoption packet. All IBR dogs are crate trained, housebroken, socialized with other dogs and loved on by their human foster parents. Adoption fees are used to cover vetting expenses and special need dogs' vetting care. Our adoption guidelines also require non-smoking homes and safe fenced in yards.

8 Ways You Can Save A Life

Help support IBR with the purchase of a 2009 12 Month Wall Calendar and choose from Pointers, Setters, Hunting Dogs, Mutts & Friends and Puppies. All of the dogs and puppies featured in these calendars would have been euthanized in shelters across the Mid-West had IBR not stepped in to save them. Your support can really make a difference!!

Check out our new Ebay Store with fundraising shirts featuring several birddog breeds like Pointers, Setters, GSP's, Vizslas, and Labradors. All purchases will help off set our high vetting expenses and may also help pay for food for some of our long term senior and special needs foster dogs in rescue. Make a donation or sponsor a homeless dog. Illinois Birddog Rescue has always prided itself in not turning away any sick and injured dogs; animals that most shelters would have euthanized. We have saved many dogs with heartworm, tick borne illnesses, broken legs, missing legs, blind dogs, a new deaf puppy, dogs suffering from Parvo and especially senior dogs that may need expensive health care to help them get ready for adoption. In February of 2006, in one weekend, we brought in 20+ dogs from the Boat Mountain Tragedy, and that depleted our emergency funds. Please help us continue to help those birddogs that have suffered terrible abuse and suffering by making an online donation here:

Your donation will not go unnoticed. In addition to helping save lives, when you donate your name will be added to the Illinois Birddog Rescue Donations and Rescue Sponsor List.
