My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Topaz is a blue-eyed and brown-eyed beauty, a "double-gem" named for both smoky and blue topazes, and what could be better than that? As a smoothie, she requires little grooming and considers that the time saved is cuddle time earned. And does she love to cuddle! In the bedroom, in the living room, every time but outdoor play time is cuddle time to Topaz!

Being a quiet dog who holds her tongue even when the doorbell rings, she expects you to be equally sedate. She doesn't feel the need to tell you something you already know – company's coming! But don't assume her quiet demeanor means she isn't happy to see the new arrival, as she will be front and center ready to greet the visitor.

Because she is so quiet, this also means she would love a quiet household, devoid of loud music and rowdy kids. Topaz's ideal home would consist of a soft-spoken older couple or single retired person. She is a sensitive girl whose feelings are easily hurt if you shout at her. In short, she prefers a calm environment where her companions speak gently to her.

Topaz would also love to have a large dog as an outdoor playmate, but once indoors the game is over and she doesn't appreciate the in-your-face types who can't distinguish between outdoor play periods and quiet indoor cuddle times. Pushing and shoving one another has its place, and to Topaz, it belongs outdoors during play time, not indoors!

If she finds you wanting in the housekeeping department, she will train you accordingly. When tasty morsels are left within her reach on the kitchen countertops or dining table, she will set you straight very quickly as to what is and what is not acceptable. After Topaz has cleaned up after you, all will quickly be forgiven during cuddle time.

Because she has a tendency to overindulge at dinner time, she should be fed separately from other dogs or she will step up to help any slower eaters clean their bowls. In short, she doesn't know when to stop eating, so to avoid a possible food fight, it is easier to separate her from other dogs at dinner time. Treat time, however, is no problem.

When Topaz wants something, she will swat at you with her paw to communicate her desires, which often means, "Hey, you haven't petted me lately!" She has excellent recall and a fenced yard is not mandatory, though always desirable. She isn't a big fan of car rides, but she tolerates them. She doesn't like to be grabbed, and will back out of her collar if something frightens her.

She would love nothing more than to sleep in bed with you, but where Topaz is concerned, sleeping is a contact sport. In bed she is a blanket hog, and she needs to feel the love by cuddling with you continuously. If you don't appreciate this, she is quite happy to sleep in her own bed on the floor. She instantly gives her heart to her people and will do anything to please them. She is truly a gem who lives up to her name.
