My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ARRIVAL STORY
I was pulled from a kill shelter. Black Dog Syndrome (black dogs are much less likely to be adopted than other colors,) combined with having some Pit Bull characteristics means that people pass me by all the time! Will you please be the one that looks past my physical traits and sees me for the wonderful dog I really am?

BIO
Cookie is an 18 month old female mixed breed dog. She has the face of a Pit Bull Terrier, the curled tail of an Akita, and the markings of a Pointer. She is just a big, ol' mutt :D Cookie weighs about 50 lbs. She gets along great with everybody, including children. She is a TOTAL people dog, and the closer she is to you, the better. Cookie is good with other dogs. She does seem to have trouble "reading" signals and body language from other dogs, which can occasionally make her the target for bullying. She is getting better, but I would never recommend her as a dog-park dog because of this. Cookie is fantastic with cats! She even plays with one of the cats in her foster home! She does not harass the ones that are not interested in playing with her, though.

Cookie walks well on a leash and does not pull. She has anxiety about being locked in small spaces, so crating is not a good option for her. Luckily, she is very well-behaved and has been successful with free run of a room. Cookie grew up with no limits or boundaries, so she can be a little pushy. These behaviors include: bopping the bowl when you are filling it with food and pushing her way through a door without permission. Realistically, these are simple behaviors that can be corrected with positive reinforcement and patience. We are currently working on them now, and she is getting better. She is also working on basic obedience behaviors and hopefully will be ready for her Canine Good Citizen test shortly. Cookie needs about 30 minutes of exercise daily. Even a walk around the block is good for her, but she would certainly love to be a jogging or bicycling partner. Luckily, she is not hyperactive or destructive if she misses a workout :) Mostly, she needs the mental stimulation to keep her brain active and busy.
Around the house, Cookie is a shadow. She is one of those dogs that always wants to know what you're doing. She will play and rough-house when you want, but if you just want to chill on the couch, she is game for that too. Overall, Cookie is a great dog that would make a fantastic companion for many different types of people. Her biggest setback is her pushiness, but really, that is pretty simple to train. All that is really needed are consistent rules and boundaries. Plus, HHPR provides free training advice for life, so you will always have our support!
