ARRIVAL STORY
Dexter was found as a stray in Hudson, FL by a kind woman. He was very emaciated, but she fed him and helped get him healthy. However, she could not let him into her house and he continued to wander at night. One morning, he came back with buckshot in his shoulder. She knew that he couldn't continue to live that way, so she reached out to us to help her out. Luckily, the buckshot did not do any serious damage. However, you can still feel a tiny pellet that got stuck in his leg, but it does not affect him at all. We took "Dex" and got him neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. To our great surprise, he was heartworm negative!! Dexter is being fostered in Wesley Chapel, FL.
BIO
Dexter is a 1.5 year old male mixed breed. He has the coloring of a Belgian Tervuren, the ears of an Australian Shepherd, and the expressions of a Husky. He is a true Heinz 57 :)
Dexter is about 45-50 lbs. His foster family includes a 3 year old boy. He does fantastic with the toddler and plays with him gently. He is also a hit with the neighborhood kids, who love to come over and play with him. We'd love to see him go to a home with kids if possible, but it is not mandatory. Dexter also gets along great with all the dogs he has come in contact with. His foster mom likes to take him to the dog park, where he has tons of fun socializing with other dogs. He totally ignores cats, so he would do great in a cat home. He sleeps quietly in a crate and is 100% housetrained. He is not a barker. He will pull gently on the leash, but he doesn't pull your arm out of socket like many dogs do. Dex also likes to play with toys and has never shown any resource guarding with them, even with kids and other dogs. Sounds like the perfect dog, huh? Surely there must be something "wrong" with him, right?
Dexter is a little shy to begin with. He takes time to adjust to new people, especially men. When you first meet him, it is best to move slowly and talk softly. However, he begins to relax within hours. After a couple of days, he is truly one of the most loyal dogs you could ask for. Dexter is quiet in the house, but he will occasionally woof at strangers if they spook him. It is not an aggressive display, just fearful. But, his foster mom has been working with him and he has improved drastically. All in all, Dexter is a fantastic dog that deserves a second chance. He just needs a little time to adjust. Just think of it this way--you give him a few days of patience and compassion, and he'll give you a lifetime of love and companionship.
