My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Casey is a very special little Sheltie girl. All Shelties are special, of course, but they only become better with age. Don't tell Casey she's "older", though! This girl still has lots of spunk! Casey came into rescue when her dear owner passed away. She will be your best friend and companion - she bonds very closely. However, don't let those innocent brown eyes fool you...she has mastered the fine art of counter surfing, and will seize the opportunity if it presents itself!

AGE: 10 years young (acts much younger and keeps up with a 1 year old Lab!)
SIZE: 23 lbs. (a good weight for her), approximately 14 inches tall
TEMPERAMENT: Casey is so very sweet and gentle, and loves to be near her person. She has lived most of her life with a woman, and is nervous around men. Casey would like a home where she can be a lady's dog again.
FENCE: A fenced yard is required, since Casey has had a fenced yard most of her life, and seems stressed when put on a tie-out. She loves to run around outside and needs a safe area in which to do so.
DOGS: Casey has lived with another dog most of her life and gets along with her canine foster sisters. She and the Lab pup have hit it off and she has a blast herding him around the yard. Casey prefers to be first in line at treat time. She could go to a home with another dog, or could be the "one & only" for someone who has time to spend with her.
CATS: Casey just pretends they are not here...once again the cats rule!
KIDS: Casey is used to an adult home, and is nervous around young children. A home with adults only, or with gentle older children or teens, would be best for Casey.
HOUSETRAINED: Yes - she's very much a lady!
CRATE: Casey is not comfortable using a crate and becomes stressed in one. As long as you make sure all food items are put away and the garbage is secured, she does very well with free run of the house. She's too smart for baby gates (we tried), so a closed door or putting things away work best.
LEASH MANNERS: Casey loves walks and when she sees the leash come out, she becomes very vocal and she is excited to "GO"!
CAR RIDES: Casey is not fond of car rides. She does not get sick, but does become stressed.
BARKING: Yes, Casey is one to voice her opinion as Shelties can be inclined to do, but she will stop when told "no".
KIDS: Casey has lived mostly in an adult home, and appeared to be kind of nervous with very young children, wanting to just stay away. She would be better suited for an adult home, or a home with gentle children over 10 years of age.
ACTIVITY: Casey is quite active for her age, and loves to run outside with the other dogs.
HEALTH ISSUES: Casey is hypothyroid, a very common condition in Shelties which does not affect quality of life or life expectancy. Casey takes a low-cost thyroid medication twice a day.

Casey is very much a lady's dog, almost at times like a Velcro! She is a great bed partner at night, preferring the middle spot and one pillow, and she will even share with one cat!

For more information on our adoption process (which includes an application, references and a home visit prior to meeting dogs) or to see other Shelties available for adoption, please visit our website at www.mnsheltierescue.org, or contact us for the adoption application. Casey's adoption fee is $125.00, and she is spayed, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and on heartworm preventative (during heartworm season), microchipped, has been bathed and brushed, etc. All of our dogs are indoor dogs and are not to be left outside unattended (not even in a fenced yard, if the adopter is not at home).
