Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Regis is about 10 yrs old and weighs 9 lbs.
Dogs lose their homes for many different reasons... most of which have nothing to do with the dog: death of a guardian, not enough time for the dog, change in work schedule, new baby, need to move to a place where dogs are not allowed, kids going off to college, change in lifestyle, prospective spouse does not like dogs, or the novelty has worn off and they just no longer want the responsibility of taking care of a dog. All of these reasons are taken from real case histories, but whatever the reason given, the bottom line is the same: an innocent dog has been abandoned by the humans he once trusted and he doesn't understand why. In an instant, his world has been turned upside down.
Regis has a similar story, and the excuse given for dumping him is just as shallow: "...he peed on the floor and we just can't have that."
Our first question, of course, is why? is there a medical problem? was he being expected to 'hold it' for too long? has something changed in the household that would suddenly cause a well-behaved and housetrained dog to pee in the house? Well after a few more questions we learned that a new dog had recently been added to the family. So Regis, not wanting to show aggression to the new dog, told him in the only way he knew how, "hey, bud, this is my house."
Regis is a sweet guy and is currently living with five other dogs in his foster home (and no marking!), but we think he would prefer to be the only dog because he doesn't really buddy up to the other dogs too much, and sometimes he gets impatient with them. However, when we went to the vet he wanted to meet-n-greet everyone he saw, both human and canine. He was particularly smitten with a female Great Dane puppy, and she with him. And to the people and dogs who ignored him, he sat up and did the cutest little wave with both paws trying to get their attention.
Here's what Regis' foster mom says... "At first he was very unsure of everything, but Regis is making tremendous progress! He snuggles in on the big doggie bed in my family room, next to the doxies & the chihuahuas. It's sooo cute... looks like a big "pup" blanket! He greets me at the door when I arrive home, and does his little "dance" with his front paws waving, begging for attention. Regis is obviously housetrained. He stands next to the front door when he needs to go potty. If I don't see him right away, he will give a little bark or come get me. He immediately goes outside & does his business! What a good boy!!"
With Regis you really have the best of both worlds. Regis is healthy and young-at-heart, and he recently had a dental cleaning so when he meets you his smile will be shiny bright. :) He's way past everything you dislike about puppyhood, and he has plenty of energy without being hyper. He walks very nicely on a leash and rides well in the car.
Truth is, there are never any guarantees about length of life with any dog (or human for that matter). But just as a puppy has his whole life ahead of him, so does an older dog have the rest of his life ahead of him. Small dogs such as Regis can live up to 20 years, so you still have the opportunity to give him the best years of his life!
