My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Tucker is a strikingly beautiful, pure bred 17 month old Sable and White Rough (long hair) neutered male Collie. He is up to date on all of his shots, micro-chipped and was negative on his heartworm test. He is young and healthy. He was surrendered to rescue because his family was losing their home. He was purchased as a puppy and has lived in one home until he was turned over to NCR.

Tucker is extremely smart. He knows the commands "sit", "down" and "shake", (lifts his paw for a hand shake). He is very sweet and has a very fun, cute and entertaining personality. He is ok with cats, although he does try to play with them. He is not fixated on them and should do fine in a home with dog savvy cats. He was raised with a child who was 8 years old when they got him as a puppy and the child was 9 when they surrendered him to NCR. He loves children but he does jump up on people, so he should only go to a home with older children who would not be afraid if he jumped up on them until he learns not to do that.

He is GREAT with other dogs and he loves to play all day long with other playful dogs, so he should go to a home with another playful dog around the same age. He is very good at playing fetch and loves to play with toys.

Tucker, as I said, is very smart and has figured out how to outsmart people. So it will be mandatory that he go to obedience classes. He has not had a positive experience with grooming in the past and is not fond of it. That is being addressed in his foster home and he is doing better. I’m sure he will test his new people and try to outsmart them as well. Positive reinforcement training has proven to be successful with him and should be continued.

Tucker is very high energy and needs more than just a walk on a leash everyday. He needs lots of running and playing every single day. He will not do well in a home where he is left alone or with another dog for many hours each day. He will at least need a home where his people can come home half way through the day, or a dog walker/pet sitter/trainer, who can spend some time with him during the day if his people are at work.

Tucker has fairly good manners in the house. He does not get on furniture but has jumped up on our bed. He minds very well when asked to get off. He does not chew on things or counter surf. He does play with toys inside the house and gets very active both inside and outside.

Tucker is crate trained very well. He will go into his crate immediately when asked to. He can sleep in his crate or out of it at night and be fine either way. He is house-trained, but I have not left him inside the house unsupervised yet, but I do think he would be fine with that, after he settled in to a new home for a couple of weeks.

Tucker was not given the attention and training he needed, and is quite a handful now because of that. He will need a home that is willing to spend plenty of time with him every day and give him lots of training.

Tucker's adoption fee will be $350. No in ground pools please. NCR does not adopt dogs outside of northern California and preference will be given to adopters in the area covered by NCR volunteers. Updated 11.08.2010
