My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi, there! My name is Duke. My foster mommy likes to sing the "Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl" song to me. She says when she sings, it makes me smile. I must admit that I sure feel like smiling a lot more lately!

You see, I used to live in a home with a family, but sadly, one of my caretakers became ill, and the family couldn't take care of my brother and me anymore. As a result, they decided to give us a chance at a new life by taking us to the shelter. Shortly after we arrived at the shelter, my brother and I were separated. I'm not really sure what happened to him, but boy did I miss him! For about a month, the shelter tried to make me feel at home, but they could see I was still pretty scared. So the shelter called ESRA to ask if they could help me out.

Within a few days of their call, my foster mommy arrived at the shelter and took me to her house. I was so excited to see her little boy! He stuck out his hand and I couldn't wait for him to scratch my chin. It was like having a family all over again. Once we got to their house, I saw the fenced-in backyard. I got so excited that I ran around the yard barking. I even found a tennis ball out there! There are two other dogs that live here, and I really like them, too. Both girl dogs have been really nice about sharing their space. When I get a little too comfy in their space, they correct me with a little bark, but I just back off and say, "Yes ma'am!" Girls can be so high maintenance sometimes.

The kids in my foster family are two and six. I can tell they know a lot about dogs. They are the best. I like to give them kisses! Even though they run through the house with their swords and toys, they treat me really nicely. I like to be out back and watch them play with their friends. No one pulls on my ears or tail, and that's a good thing!

You see, it appears that while I was living with my old family, I might have had a pretty bad case of the fleas and an ear infection, too. As a result, I'm really not fond of having my ears touched. My foster mommy took me to a nice vet and I could tell the doctor was trying to be nice, but nobody knew how sore those flea bites were on my ears. When I tried telling them, they all decided it would be best to put this funny little cage on my face. Yikes! They were able to clean out my ears, but now I have these drops for my ears. I will let my foster mommy touch my ears. This is because she and my foster daddy have been giving me treats (meatballs--yum!) when I let them touch my ears.

I love to play fetch, and I can Sit like a good boy. I'm also crate trained. My foster Mommy says that I'm just the right mix of energy and relaxation. I'm definitely a boy that would love to go for a walk or run, but at night I'm quite content to lie on the floor while the family unwinds. I really enjoy my fenced-in backyard, but I'm not quite sure that would be a must at my Forever Home. When I'm in the front yard, I stick pretty close to the other dogs. I'm in a good place, and so far I haven't seen any reason to dart off!

Even though I've got it good here, I'm anxious to find my new "Furever" Family. My foster mommy says that since I've had sore ears, I'd probably do best in home with a family with slightly older kids. Then again, I'm pretty fond of her two-year-old. He's got the best face for kisses!

Love,
Duke
