Hello there! My name is Farley and I am so happy that you are looking at me! Let me tell you my story….
I was found running loose in the streets of Newark, and brought to the shelter. They shelter staff knew right away that I was a special dog, and one of them identified me as a purebred American Foxhound. (I heard someone else refer to me as an oversized beagle but really now, I am much too big to be mistaken for one of those kinds of dogs. Thankfully, even though I am a rare and unique breed, common sense prevailed). Anyway, I sat in a cage at the shelter for almost two full months, and it was NOT very fun. Finally, a nice lady took me out and gave me a “behavior test” which I apparently passed with flying colors!! Then they took lots of pictures of me and sent them out to “rescue groups”. They have a thing called “euthanasia” at the shelter and I overheard them say that I might be on that list, so I am VERY glad my foster mom saw my picture and came right down to the shelter to save me.
I am about 3 or 4 years old and about 75 pounds, but my foster family says I act just like a big puppy. Since no one ever taught me how to walk nicely on a leash, I tend to get overly excited and pull a lot. My foster mom is being very patient with me and she says I am “making progress”. I am housetrained and crate trained, and I would be thrilled with a fenced-in yard. It’s OK if you don’t have one, but be prepared to take me for a lot of walks if you don’t! I know how to “sit” when asked politely and I swoon when someone scratches my butt. I love to play with toys, especially plush ones, because there is simply nothing better than pulling all of the stuffing out of them bit by bit. What fun!!
I also like to play with other dogs – size doesn’t matter, I like all kinds. I love kids too, but my foster mom says I would probably be “too much dog” for tiny children, because I am not very graceful and I might accidentally step on them or play too roughly with them. I love going for car rides and I especially love when my foster dad lets me ride in his pickup truck! My foster family laughs like crazy when I stick my big head out of the window. In fact, they always seem to be laughing when they are with me – my foster mom says every time I bounce across the room or climb into her bed to keep her warm that it is impossible not to smile. I guess my goofy personality is contagious.
So, in closing, I am hoping that if you have room in your house for a nice big guy like me that you will fill out an application immediately or come down to an “adoption event” at PetCo to meet me. I promise that I will make you happy and that you will not be disappointed!
Check the events page on our website for more information and directions to meet our dogs.
