Nacho (formerly known as Kyzer) is a male Merle Chihuahua who was surrendered by his owner Oct 2/10. He was in brought into this home as a companion to a female Jack Russell Terrier however the female didn't seem to like him and would frequently pick on him, so the owner decided he'd be better off in another home rather than trying to keep him safe from this female. He's quite submissive so is better off in a household that doesn't have a dominant dog or as a single dog household. He's timid at first but warms up quickly - he did live with children aged 9-14 but we think he may be better in an adult household. He has been around cats and is fine with them, though didn't actually live with any. He is crate trained, trained for paper/puppy pads but will also go outside to do his business in good weather. He loves to be outdoors but obviously being so little and short haired he doesn't do well out in the cold, so can't stay out long in cold weather. He's accustomed to grooming, playful and affectionate though a bit nervous and has a high energy level. He does like to fetch but isn't fond of being yelled at. He has one brown eye and his other eye has some blue to it. He came along on a 5km off-leash dog walk in local walking trails with 16 other dogs on Oct 3 and thoroughly enjoyed himself and all the other dogs. Nacho was fostered for 4 days to give him a break from the shelter. His foster-mom says: He gets along well with my large lab/pit bull and 3 cats. He's very affectionate and loves to cuddle on your lap. If left to himself he will find a blanket and literally burrow himself under them. He shakes because he's very little and a bit under weight. He'll most likely need a sweater for most of the year except in summer. He learned not to come in the kitchen within 1 day and was in the process of learning not to jump on certain pieces of furniture, he's quite smart. He responds very well to mild corrections - snapping fingers or a quiet "Shh". He's not entirely house-trained, but this could be because of his size, he has a smaller bladder and will need to either use puppy pads in the house or go outside 3-4 times a day. He needs smaller size kibble and is accustomed to eating dry food mixed with wet food. We are using Nacho as a fundraiser dog to help raise funds for the care of other shelter animals. So his adoption fee will be $500.
