My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Dheera: 2 yr female Bernese Mountain Dog

Meet darling Dheera! She is a female, spayed Bernese Mountain Dog, approx. 2yrs

Dheera joined us from a rural pound after being found stray, severely emaciated and with frost bitten ears.

She is now thriving in her foster home with high quality frequent meals, TLC and couch snuggles which are her favourite.

Dheera’s adoption fee includes spay, microchip, dental cleaning and extractions if needed, bloodwork, vaccinations, deworming, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and all vet care, food and supplies during their time with us.

She would love a family who has large breed experience with a large fenced yard for playing supervised. She is not a farm dog, Dheera lives indoors and requires a home committed to keeping her safe at all times after her horrible history fending for herself as a stray in bitter cold weather.

She is not a suitable fit for attached housing as she does bark a bit when her foster family leaves her alone, though she does settle. Having a canine companion in her forever home would be ideal for Dheera's confidence and happiness.

PLEASE READ HER ADOPTION PROFILE BEFORE APPLYING to be sure that your family is the right match for Dheera’s needs in her ideal forever home.

An adoption application must be submitted in order to be considered.
Please DO NOT use the introduce yourself option, this is not an application.

Notes:
* Mandatory registration with an approved trainer is a requirement
*Due to her young age and size, she is not a suitable match for older seniors. Our goal for every dog is to be able to live a full life in their forever home without ever having to be rehomed
*NO young children due to her size - she is still learning how to not push people over with excitement. She has learned not to jump on people while they are standing but loves to dive onto her fosters while they are sitting on the couch
*Inground/ground level Pools and deeper ponds must be separately fenced from yard
Hobo Haven is located in St Jacobs ON.
For approved families, we require in person meetings in St Jacobs ON
Adoptions within Ontario only

Notes from her foster family:

Your foster dog's energy level: Medium
Dheera plays with her foster sister in our fenced in yard, and has multiple 20-40 minute walks daily

Is your foster dog food motivated? Yes, she is learning not to counter surf which has greatly improved now that she is being fed properly. Dheera arrived into our care severely emaciated but is now thriving.

Good with dogs - Friendly with her foster sister who is a large breed St Bernard. Dheera is more nervous with small dogs and due to her prey drive with cats, we are recommending a home with another large breed friendly dog or a dog free home would also be fine.

How does your foster dog respond to meeting new people in their home environment and outside of the home? Nervous at first, but warms up quickly
Good with cats? NO, Dheera must be in a home without cats or other small animals

Any guarding behaviours noted incl guarding food/treats, people or furniture/valued spaces? If so, how is it managed? Mild resource guarding of her own food bowl with other pets, but she shares treats and toys no problem. She eats alone in her crate.

Housetrained? Yes
Crate trained? No She goes in to eat, but once she is done she starts pawing and barking at the crate. She is fine left outside of her crate in the home and does not require crating.

I leave my foster dog alone for ___h per day. 4
Does your foster dog show signs of separation anxiety? No

Please elaborate on your foster dog's leash skills. Dheera is working on her leash training, gets nervous walking near moving cars. Pulls and stops to smell a lot, but not unmanageable. Walked on harness. She is easily distracted, but still cowers when cars drive by too close. She walks way better with another dog along for confidence. She is interested in other dogs and pulls to smell but does not lunge
Dheera is starting obedience classes as soon as she has healed from her spay surgery.

Dheera is great with grooming, vet appts and all physical touching including nail trims are fine.
How would you describe the dog's personality/temperament Shy, sweet, loving, happy

She will need a patient family who will help her gain confidence, socialization and continuing with her training.

Things needing improvement Leash walking, voice commands

Housetrained now and will sit for a treat when coming inside from going potty
Dheera is a good travelling companion, she is extremely calm in cars

She is blossoming in her foster home and ready to find her own forever family.
