My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Picasso von Grieben is a sweet and curious 10 month-old boy who’s ready to bring his gentle charm to a forever home. (He arrived at the rescue with his equally sweet sister, Georgia, and they are available together as an optional pair). Picasso loves to explore the world with a wagging tail and an open heart. He walks beautifully on leash, always ready to discover new things and meet new friends—both human and canine. He enjoys lounging by your side, especially if he can sit with you seeing the views and people-watch. A soft, easygoing boy, he loves affection and is learning his basic commands. In playgroups, Picasso does great. Though he starts off quietly, he quickly feels comfortable and enjoys exploring the yard. He’s a friendly greeter who wags his tail when approached but thus far tends to prefer following the pups around rather than actively engaging in play. (He passed a small dog test but says no to kitties). Picasso would make a wonderful addition to a loving home that enjoys calm companionship, sweet affection, and a gentle walking buddy.

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
