My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Cherokee von Carouge is a gorgeous 1-2 year old long haired German Shepherd. He is a big-hearted boy with a soft, fluffy coat and an even softer personality. From the moment he steps out with a wagging tail, you can tell he’s ready to be your new best friend. Cherokee is affectionate, sweet, and always eager to make new friends—both two-legged and four-legged. He loves staying close on walks, taking in the sights and sounds around him. He walks beautifully on a leash and greets other dogs with gentle enthusiasm. He knows basic commands like “sit” and “down,” takes treats politely, and enjoys giving sweet kisses in return for your love. In the play yard, Cherokee shines! He’s social, happy, and loves to run and explore. His favorite play style includes a good game of chase and some gentle wrestling with his canine buddies. He’s a confident greeter and always comes over for some affection. He would thrive in a home that offers both affection and adventure. If you’re looking for a loyal, loving, and playful companion, Cherokee just might be your perfect match. (PS: He would like a home without cats or little dogs, please)

Rescued from the Inland Valley animal shelter.

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
