This handsome fellow is Chipster. He is estimated to be around 11years old and weighs about 9 pounds. We think he is mostly or perhaps all Dachshund due to his long body, pointy nose, and short legs. He sports a gorgeous reddish-brown coat that is long and silky. He also has big furry paws and the cutest floppy ears you’ve ever seen. He came to us as a stray from a shelter but it is clear someone loved and cared for this boy much of his life.
He is a moderate energy boy. He is always ready for a walk outside on leash, but he also loves daytime naps in his little bed or just being near his people while they work from home. Chipster may have spent a lot of time riding in a truck in his former life. He is very interested in passenger trucks, and he wanted to take off with both the UPS and FedEx drivers when he saw them stop! He gets along great with his foster siblings, all of whom are much smaller than he is. He eats well and is not picky at mealtimes. He has only three teeth so he needs soft food for all meals and treats.
Chipster is crate trained as well as house trained. Being an older boy, it’s best for him if he can go outside for potty breaks several times a day. Chipster’s foster parents seldom put him in his crate because he is such mellow boy. He is smart too. He learned his new name — Chipster— within about 3 days and responds to it. He will cry and fuss when his foster parents go out the front door. This is because he knows they are outside but not really gone. He won’t fuss when they go out the garage door because somehow he realizes they are leaving. In either case, Chipster throws a huge Welcome Home party when his foster parents return. He barks, howls, and even does a bouncy dance on his short legs!
Chipster’s ideal family is one who wants a sweet, moderate energy dog for several short walks outdoors each day and lots of love and companionship indoors. A securely fenced yard would be great, but not required if Chipster can go on several walks a day on his leash. He doesn’t do great on stairs, thus a single story home would be best for Chipster. Because he has a long coat, his family needs to make sure he is brushed, bathed and groomed on a regular basis. Chipster loves sleeping in bed with his foster famiy at night and would do best with a family who wants him with them while they sleep. Due to his age and long/relatively fragile spine, Chipster needs an adult only home or a home where the children are mature and gentle with him.
