Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Brego, a 5-year-old, 40-pound bundle of quiet courage, is searching for a safe place where he can finally let his guard down. When you first meet Brego, his soulful eyes quietly ask, “Is it safe to trust you?” His heart, though a little wary, is still full of hope. With gentle patience and a kind hand, Brego’s nervous tremble begins to ease, and beneath that cautious exterior is a dog who longs to believe that love can be forever.
Every day with Brego adds a new chapter to his story of bravery. Recently, on a chilly day, Brego politely declined a cozy jacket—he’s a “tough guy” who prefers to face the cold over wearing something he’s not quite ready for! But even without the extra warmth, he soaked up every moment of yard time, enjoyed a well-deserved Pup Cup, and quietly relished a peaceful car ride. And here’s the heartwarming part: instead of hesitating, Brego hopped right into the car this time—a small but powerful sign of his growing trust.
Brego is learning, one gentle touch at a time, that the world isn’t so scary after all. He’s still a little unsure in new environments and may tremble in the shelter lobby, but he’s beginning to trust that safe arms can stop the shaking. After one recent outing, Brego allowed his volunteer to scoop him up, and as he melted into the comfort of a warm hug, his trembling eased. Each kind interaction is teaching Brego that maybe—just maybe—this world has a place for him.
Once Brego settles in, he’s the ideal adventure buddy and snuggle pro. In the car, he’s the perfect passenger—quiet and content to watch the world pass by. And when the journey’s over, he’s all about soaking up affection. He leans in for those irresistible butt scratches (his absolute favorite!) and stretches out in quiet happiness, savoring the love he’s beginning to believe he deserves.
Brego’s heart needs time to trust and space to heal. He would do best in a calm, predictable home with an adopter who understands that building trust is a journey, not a sprint. Because of his sensitive nature, Brego may feel more comfortable in a home with older, respectful children, where he can learn at his own pace and feel safe exploring the world around him.
A volunteer recently reflected, “Brego looked into my eyes as I held his head gently in my hands. I told him he is loved and that his perfect family is out there. I believe that with all my heart. Until then, I will cherish every moment I get to spend with him.”
If you’re ready to give Brego the safety, patience, and love he’s been waiting for, he’s ready to give you his whole heart. Let’s write the next chapter of Brego’s journey—together.
