My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet D.O.G – The Gentle Giant

D.O.G is a lovable, extra-large Mastiff/Great Dane mix with a heart as big as his 108-pound frame. At nine years old, this easygoing, affectionate boy is a true couch potato who just wants to be close to his people. His calm demeanor and gentle nature make him a fantastic companion for someone looking for a loyal, laid-back best friend!

D.O.G is the definition of a gentle giant. He adores human companionship and will happily lounge by your side, gently pawing at you if you stop petting him too soon. His signature move? A happy tail wag that goes in circles when he’s feeling content!

Despite his size, he’s incredibly sweet and well-mannered. He has shown no reactivity to other dogs, and enjoys meeting new canine friends! He also does great with cats, living peacefully with multiple felines in his foster home—he may give them a sniff or a lick, but if they hiss, he quickly backs off like the big softie he is!

While he hasn’t met children yet, his calm nature suggests he would do well, though due to his size, he may be best suited for a home with older kids.

D.O.G is house-trained but may mark in a new environment until he settles in. He is crate-trained and does well in a large kennel/run, though he is so relaxed and low-energy that crating may not even be necessary—his favorite place is the couch, right next to you!

While he is a laid-back boy, he is very strong on leash and will need an adopter who can work with him on leash manners. A fenced yard would be ideal for him to have a safe space to explore and stretch his legs without needing too much leash time.

D.O.G’s story is a heartbreaking yet hopeful one—his previous owner passed away three years ago, and kind neighbors kept him fed until he was rescued. Now, he is finally getting the love and attention he deserves! He arrived with a wound on his leg, which is now healing well. He has tested positive for Lyme disease and is currently undergoing treatment.

If you’re looking for a big, lovable companion who just wants to snuggle, D.O.G is your guy. He has been through a lot but remains incredibly affectionate and grateful for the love he receives. Whether he’s wagging his tail in happy circles, lounging on the couch, or pawing at you for more pets, he will steal your heart in no time.

Are you ready to give this gentle giant the forever home he deserves? D.O.G can’t wait to meet you!

The adoption fee is $250. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
