My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Thora and Sister Smudge are a bonded pair of sweet and affectionate 1-year-old “sisters” looking for a groovy home to call “home” forever!

Though it is unlikely these girls are true biological sisters, they love each other as so and are happiest together. They can often be found napping in the same bed with all 8 paws and 2 tails intertwined. When their humans come into their foster room, they immediately jump down to greet them with their signature flop-and-wiggle on the floor as they ask for scratchies. If Thora and Sister Smudge could talk, they would proudly purr “We are Family” to those with an open heart, promising to bring warmth and joy to their forever home for many years to come!

In case you’re wondering who’s who, Thora is the small black cutie with an adorably round head and two bright eyes. She is the braver of the pair, and is sweetly nicknamed “Thora the Explorer” as she is the first to investigate a new person or situation. She loves to play with string and wand toys, has happy kneading paws as she purrs, and likes to look out the window and observe the squirrels and birds. Thora enjoys petting, but the way to initially win her favor is through play.

Sister Smudge is the dark tortie with a couple unique orange swirls. She is more reserved at first, waiting for the reassurance from Thora that she is safe and can come out to interact. Once settled Smudgie is very affectionate and social, climbing into laps to cuddle as well as wanting to be around her sister. Smudge isn’t quite as playful, but will still bat at wand toys and catnip balls and do some wrestle-and-chase with Thora.

Both of these kitties came from an outdoor cat colony with 40+ cats. Their fosters slowly built trust with them outside, and after a few months Sister Smudge and Thora would greet them at dinner time and ultimately decided they really liked being scratched. Considering that they spent their first year without regular human contact, they are remarkably calm and trusting of humans. They have adjusted well to the sounds of indoor life – computers, music and people talking around them – and have been perfect litter-box users since day 1!

Their ideal home could be any size apartment or house, with plenty of windows for the girls to watch the outdoors and reminisce about their past life in the great outdoors (although they both agree that life indoors is much more enjoyable). These girls are great with other cats, and have not yet met a dog or young children. As with most cats, they will take time to warm up to new people and environments and to gradually explore larger spaces. Once settled, both cats allow nail trimming and can be picked up and will eat snacks from human hands.

Overall, Thora and Sister Smudge are a well adjusted cat duo who love nothing more than each other, good lap snuggles and fun playful times. They are so excited to find a forever home that they can continue to thrive in, rewarding their humans with all of the good vibes and joy that come with cat companionship! Apply below if you’d like to meet them.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
