Sutton has been with us since February 2025, and her background helps explain the behaviors we see today. After reviewing her history, we confirmed that she originally came from a property where multiple dogs were kept in poor conditions. The dogs had minimal contact with people aside from their owner.
This lack of socialization and high-conflict environment aligns closely with Sutton’s current challenges.
The Challenges (Honest Truth):
-Can be highly reactive to other dogs; escalates quickly in close proximity.
-May fixate on other dogs and has a history of escalating altercations.
-Needs to be the only pet in the home.
-Needs ongoing work on impulse control, redirection, and handler focus.
Why She’s Worth It:
-Away from dog-related triggers, Sutton is incredibly affectionate and people-oriented.
-Calm, sweet, and responsive in low-stimulation environments.
-Food-motivated, takes treats gently, and listens well during one-on-one training.
-Has shown excellent leash manners on quiet walks and enjoys exploring and cuddling.
-Staff and Volunteers consistently describe her as well-behaved, gentle, and loving when out of the shelter environment.
Sutton isn’t the right fit for every home. She needs a calm, structured environment where she can be the only animal and continue working on her confidence and self-control. With the right person, Sutton has the potential to be a deeply loyal, affectionate companion who thrives on love, routine, and one-on-one attention.
