My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

***Currently located in Vancouver, BC***

Hi! My name is Boh (named after a character in Spirited Away) and I was born in a small village in Mexico.  My mom was tethered in a goat stable, which is where she gave birth to me and my four siblings. Due to our mother's confinement, we had no other choice than to spend our first few weeks of our life in the dirt and goat feces. We were in rough shape when we were rescued, and were really happy when we arrived at the shelter. As a puppy, I was quite mellow and chill during the day. My two sisters were more worried about meeting new people or dogs, but my brothers and I were very curious and outgoing.

Jump forward to 2025, and I am now in a loving foster home in Vancouver. My foster momma loves me a lot and said I am such a darling! She is tempted to keep me but thinks I would be happier in a home outside of the city . I love her too, and I really enjoy her quiet home. We like to cuddle on the couch, where I get bellyrubs and she gets tons of kisses in return.

My ideal home would be not too busy  like to just relax and I can do that best without children running around or new people coming over frequently. I like slow introductions with people and need a few minutes to warm up 'til I am ready to show them all the love I have to give. Then there is nothing holding me back, because I am an absolute cuddlebug! My trainer calls me and my Mexi Mutt friends 'inner-circle dogs', meaning that I love everyone who is in the circle and will take a moment of sniffing and checking out new people, before showing them my true loving self.

In the past, I showed signs of resource guarding over special treats like bones  and my favorite toys , but I haven't been worried about other dogs or humans invading my own space in a while. I would still love an experienced dog owner who is familiar with that behavior and who can give me a safe space, where I can relax fully.

Other dogs equal a lot of fun to me! I would also love to have another dog in the home, as long as we can eat separately . It's not a must, though, as being the only pupper in the house is amazing, too! But I do really like playing with other dogs and romping around. Same as with people, I prefer a slow intro with a little parallel walk first. Then I am great and get along really well with every four-legged friend!

The beach is my favorite place on earth! Next to the dog park.  But nothing beats the beach - what an awesome place to spend a Saturday afternoon, don't you think? The water is also pretty exciting to me and I will definitely jump in and have a blast, if I get a chance! At the dog park, I ignore the humans, as I care more about the other pups! On leash, I can be a bit anxious, but my trainer says I am responding wonderfully to her methods... I must say I try my absolute best! I have been told that I have a great will to please, I am very food motivated, and easily distracted - which apparently makes me a dream dog!

Here is what my foster momma says about me
Boh would thrive best in a home outside of the city where there’s more space to roam and a quieter, less chaotic environment. He’s looking for a family that is not only patient and experienced but also committed to working with a trainer to help him continue to reach his potential. Boh is very food motivated, which makes training sessions fun and rewarding and he continues to learn new skills in his foster home. While he can sometimes be a little unsure about new situations, he’s fantastic at communicating his feelings through body language, so someone who can read those cues will be a great match.

If you're looking for a dog who's sweet, intelligent, and eager to build a strong bond with the right family, Boh is ready to meet you and find his forever home!

More about this rescue

Surfers for Strays was started in January of 2017 by Isabel Velasco and Natalie Ritenour when they rescued 7 puppies and their mother, who had been abandoned at a local hot springs in Lagunillas, Guerrero, Mexico. The puppies were being eaten alive by parasites and their mother was severely malnourished.

Working together the women devised a plan to house and care for the animals and raise funds and more importantly, raise awareness to sterilize pets. They gained enough support in the local community to start helping “callajeros”, street animals in the villages of Troncones, Los Llanos, La Saladita and surrounding regions.

With the help of local veterinarians and citizens, they organized spay and neuter clinics and a program to educate children on how to treat and care for animals. Surfers and other travelers began volunteering and growing the network to foster and adopt animals in the US and Canada. With that momentum and the love and support of key volunteers, Surfers for Strays Inc. was founded in August of 2019 to cover more ground and help more animals escape the cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment. From 2020-2021, Surfers for Strays adopted out more than 250 dogs and cats to fur-ever homes in North America and paid for more than 3,150 dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered in local communities in Mexico.

Your donations support our programs to sterilize, rehabilitate, find fosters and adopters for animals in need. Your donations also support education programs for the humane treatment of animals in underserved communities. Together we are saving animals and sharing the Mucho Aloha spirit.
