My name is Chap and I am a brown & black mastiff. I am a neutered male and I am 8 years old. I was transferred here from another shelter/rescue through the Ames Animal Shelter`s Third Chance program on 03/08/2025. I was left abandoned at that other shelter by my owner, and I waited at that shelter for a home for a year. I am potty trained. I am a medium energy dog and I will need an owner with some prior pet owning experience. I am a very good boy, but I`m a large guy and that requires you to have the space and accommodations for me to be comfortable. The shelter staff is not sure if I am used to being crated during the day, but I am comfortable in my kennel at the shelter. I do pull when walked on the leash and am very strong, so I`ll need a strong owner! A fenced yard would be a great way to let me exercise, but is not required. Due to my large size and tendency to boss around other creatures, the shelter staff will not place me in a home with other pets or children under 14 years old. Being in my golden years, I think I`ve earned the right to be the center of your world in my new home!
All dogs are tested for heartworms and given flea preventatives. They are also tested for intestinal parasites and receive routine dewormings. Dogs are vaccinated against distemper, rabies, and bordetella, spayed/neutered before adoption, and have a microchip. Adoption fees include the initial automated registration of the microchip at the time of adoption.

Additional adoption info
The Ames Animal Shelter's adoption process is all about ensuring the right match for the benefit of both the people and the animal. We use our application screening process to pre-approve applicants for general adoption. This gets all the boring paperwork stuff out of the way so when you come in to the shelter we can focus with you on finding the perfect furry friend match.
Our applications are not a simple pass/fail process, but instead are an opportunity for us to gather information on the needs of your family and the situation you'll be bringing an animal into.
