When we heard about a blind, abandoned senior cat that had been found under a bridge, we
hoped we'd be able to help. It took the efforts of four rescue groups and our local shelter to
come together, to help River make it safely to Golden Oldies Cat Rescue.
River is a very sweet and gentle cat, trusting of people, even after all that he’s been through.
Our best guess is that he is maybe ten years old, although he may be a little younger or older.
After coming into our care and visiting the veterinary ophthalmologist, it was determined that his
left eye was causing him pain, similar to a migraine that never goes away. He also was
discovered to have two fractured and painful teeth. Otherwise in great health and with no
special needs, River has had surgery recently to remove his painful teeth and eye. He is on the
mend, purring and loving attention from his foster. He has great litter box skills and is eating his
soft food well. Could you imagine having severe dental pain, in addition to a migraine, but still
being gentle and loving? That’s how nice a cat River is! Blind cats adjust to their environment
well and don’t need any special accommodations necessarily.
His right eye MAY be able to see light/dark and is stable for now, he has some drops to keep it
comfortable for him. A small price to pay for such a wonderful and deserving cat.
We are looking for an adopter that is able to keep River’s fur tangle free, (he loves to be
brushed) and can administer eye drops every other day. He is a wonderful lap warmer!

More about this rescue
Golden Oldies Cat Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in June 2016.
Our mission is to be a resource and advocate for older cats in Monterey County. We re-home older cats in Monterey County whose guardians can no longer care for them, or those who are at risk in local shelters. We place these cats in temporary foster homes and then find permanent loving homes for them enriching the lives of both the cats and their new humans.
We promise a lifetime commitment to the cats in our care. They either will be adopted or will live out their lives in one of our foster homes.
Golden Oldies is led by a board who share a vision of helping older cats in Monterey County live out their remaining years in safe, secure and loving homes. We are all volunteer and 100 percent foster-based
