My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

2010 16.2HH Bay Thoroughbred Gelding

Meet Gatsby, a gorgeous OTTB (Off-the-Track Thoroughbred) with a heart of gold. Registered under the name Shahs Luger, Gatsby is a sweet, middle-of-the-herd kind of guy. He’s a quick learner with a curious mind, making him a fantastic candidate for liberty work. Through consistent groundwork, he’s gaining confidence and showing incredible progress.

Gatsby has been diagnosed with grade 1 DSLD (Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis), which means he is in the early stages of the condition. While DSLD can progress over time, he is currently sound and preparing to begin under-saddle training. To get ready, Gatsby is building confidence through groundwork and will be lightly rideable once started. He is currently wearing nail-on shoes on all four feet due to thin soles, which will help his hooves develop greater depth.

This special boy has a history of neglect, so he’s looking for a patient, understanding adopter to help him truly blossom. Gatsby thrives with soft but firm boundaries, a compassionate leader, and someone attuned to body language. He’s very food motivated, an easy keeper, and eager to please, qualities that make him both endearing and rewarding to work with.

Adoption Process

Once a complete application is received, KYEAC will begin the screening process. This usually takes about 5-7 days, depending upon how easy it is to make contact with your references.

KYEAC will notify you when your application has been approved, and you may then make an appointment with KYEAC to visit the equine(s) you are interested in adopting.

Adopters are responsible for transportation arrangements and costs at the time of the adoption and in the event of return.

Adoption fees are non-refundable.

Please also note that Adopter agrees that the adopted equine may not be raced, bred, sold, given away or assigned by the Adopter, except as otherwise provided in the adoption contract.

Further, we require adopters to complete an inspection on the adopted equine at 6 and 12 months after the date of the adoption. Provided the photos and veterinary report from these two inspections are satisfactory, KYEAC will then transfer full ownership of the equine to the Adopter at 12 months via a transfer letter.

More about this rescue

The Kentucky Equine Adoption Center (KyEAC) is the largest all-breed equine rescue in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Nestled on 72 acres in the rolling hills of Jessamine County, KyEAC is the home and training ground for approximately 50 equines at all stages of rehabilitation and retraining. We are not a sanctuary; part of our mission is to find the perfect home and purpose for all of our horses–from high level dressage to therapeutic equine companions, from trail horses to pasture ponies.
