Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Nina is a 6-year-old, spayed Akita (A1306949) currently being cared for at San Jose Animal Care & Services Center that is looking for her new home and family.
Nina was surrendered to them on 01/05/25 due to unexpected circumstances with her previous owner. When she arrived, they immediately noticed several medical concerns with her skin and coat along with being underweight. According to her previous owner, Nina’s skin had improved significantly when on a home-cooked diet, which they believe helped with food allergies. While we can’t provide that here, we have her on a hypoallergenic diet and she’s gained about 3 pounds since her arrival. She’s been spayed and is now up-to-date on all her vaccinations.
We’ve also learned a lot about Nina's temperament during her time with us. She’s a gentle and sweet girl, but she’s understandably fearful of handling in certain ways. She can be sensitive when her ears are touched and showed signs of stress during one particular exam, but she didn't attempt to bite. Nina is very food-motivated and responds well to treats, which makes training her much easier.
She’s also had positive experiences outside the shelter, even going on a Dog Day Out outing where she was non-reactive to both people and other animals passing by. She’s lived with cats in the past and did well with them, so we believe she could thrive in a home with other pets, given the right introductions.
As for her health, Nina has moderate muscle wasting, particularly in her hind end, which is common given her underconditioned state. Her recent vet exam on 01/08/25 showed some mild skin scaling, erythema and hair loss, all of which we’re actively treating. She’s currently on a treatment plan that includes antibiotics (Cefpodoxime), antifungal (Fluconazole) and Prednisone, as well as a hypoallergenic diet to help manage her skin issues. A recheck is scheduled for 02/19/25 to evaluate her progress, especially her skin and weight.
Nina is a sweetheart and needs a patient, understanding home where she can continue to heal and build trust. She will thrive with a dedicated owner who can help her regain confidence and provide a stable, loving environment.
Thank you for considering Nina. We’d love to discuss more about her if you think your might be able to help her find her forever home.
