PAUL is a delightful 3 year old Border collie mix. He is a rough coat that weighs in at about 50 pounds. His long coat will require regular maintenance. Paul loves people. He has been put on this earth to be petted, loved, and adored. He took right to his foster family, wanting love and affection from day one. He has not met a stranger (makes immediate friends) he hasn’t loved, and they love him right back. Both the shelter and vet staffs adore him, reinforcing with “Paul is charming,” something we already knew.
As much as PAUL loves couch and cuddle time, it is very important for him to have a balance between activity and down time. Paul experienced injuries to his back legs (it is quite obvious observing his gait). When he first got to his foster home, he exhibited some stiffness and slowness. We got him out moving around and, in short order, he became more limber, enjoyed the activity, and began running with the other dogs while showing much greater mobility. We have consulted with an orthopedic specialist to find out more about the injuries. They suspect this happened a year or more ago, and while healed, the legs did not set properly. Paul will not be a hiking partner, but short, frequent walks, as well as backyard activity, will be very important for Paul in order to maintain muscle tone. He will also need to be kept at a lean body weight to achieve less stress on the joints. The Dr. suggests he lose another 2 – 3 pounds. Supplements and treatments will be discussed in more detail with applicants. Surgery is not a realistic option due to recovery time with little to no value-add for Paul. He should be able to live a very normal and happy life.
PAUL loves nothing more than hopping up on the couch to join us for cuddles and pets. If he is on his belly, and the petting stops, he’ll twist and shimmy until he is on his back wanting belly rubs. He is not overbearing though, as he is also very content to curl up on a dog bed or stretch out on the floor. But give him the slightest glance and his tail starts wagging. His goal is to be as near to his people as he can be. This is true even on walks around the yard. He was tough to photograph outside as he’d stay close, even though he was not leashed.
When out with the other dogs PAUL follows them around a bit, but does not really engage in play time. He is content to roam the yard and enjoy the outdoors. Paul did not even mind the rain. He goes in and out regularly and became accustomed very quickly to using the doggy door. He is house and crate trained. He has had no accidents in his foster home. He goes into his crate willingly as he knows its meal or treat time. He sleeps quietly all night. He has earned free time during the day and is only crated for meals, sleep, or when we are away. He pays a little more attention to the cats than we’d like, so for their comfort we are recommending a home with either a dog savvy cat, or a cat-free environment.
PAUL does not seem interested in toys or bones, but he loves his food and treats so training could be a lot of fun, He already has many of the basics down. He sits nice, though quickly flops to the floor as he does have a little trouble with traction on our laminate floors. He has no trouble getting back up, and moves well.
While PAUL would enjoy the partnership another dog offers, he would be just fine as an only dog so long as he has your full attention most of the day. If you enjoy being out with your dogs to keep them active, and love cuddle time, Paul may be the boy for you.
