Adoption Fee $300
Oscar is a strikingly handsome 2-year-old male German Shepherd with a fluffy red and black coat. His facial markings are as distinct as they are beautiful. He was picked up as a stray in the Dixon area and came to the rescue from the Solano County shelter, so his background is unknown.
Oscar likes to meet new people and is friendly and affectionate with everyone he meets. He is more interested in people than dogs, but given a proper introduction, he has been good all the other dogs he’s met. Oscar really enjoys playing with the dogs in his foster pack, although we always supervise play as he can have somewhat of a rough-and-tumble play style. He loves going for walks and does well on a leash both individually and within a pack. At times he can become a little reactive to other dogs encountered when on walks, but he corrects easily.
Oscar is mostly housebroken but has had a few accidents in the house from time to time when we’ve forgotten to let him out often enough. We think he would probably do fine if he had outdoor access thru a dog door. He sleeps comfortably thru the night in a crate and goes in without fuss. But he’s just as happy to rest or hang out on a dog bed or thick rug in a comfortable location. He rides well in the car and is good at taking turns with his pack mates sticking his head out of the window for some fresh air.
Despite being found as a stray, we believe Oscar may have had some formal training, and came to us knowing sit, stay, down and a few other basic commands. He is learning more each day and responds well to training exercises. He’s highly treat motivated, so getting him further trained will not be difficult.
At a little under 70 lbs, Oscar is a pretty good size, even though he looks bigger due to all his floofy fur! He has a soft mouth, and likes chew toys such as Nylabones, but will also enjoy a plush toys or squeak ball if offered. He does appear to have fairly high prey drive, judging on how he reacts to squirrels around the yard. We have not tested him with cats, but anyone considering adopting him would do well to introduce them carefully.
Oscar’s ideal day is a nice romp in the yard with his foster pack, a big bowl of kibble, a nap inside the house, a moderate walk, followed by more yard romping, dinner, and a quiet evening laying at your feet. Just be ready to start the day with a very excited boy who can’t wait to see you and get a big hug.
Oscar’s only real fault is that he has a high degree of separation anxiety. He is a good example of a “Velcro dog” that REALLY needs to always be with his person. We think he would do best in a home with another Dog to keep him company when his people are away. Wherever he finds his forever home, this loving and sweet boy would benefit greatly with a complete obedience training course, which will be a great way for his new owners to bond with him! Also good to note if you’re looking for one, Oscar was professionally evaluated and approved to be trained as an assistance dog.
