My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Clifford the Big Red Dog AKA Biggie Boy is searching for his perfect forever family!

Biggie has been in foster since March 16, 2024, and he has accomplished SO MUCH since getting rescued! When he came into rescue, he was positive for heartworm, underweight, filthy, and had fly strike on his ears and tail. Humans had failed him, he had known neglect. It is our belief he was kept outside his whole life, unable to get away from the mosquitos that gave him heartworm and the flies that ate away at his ears and tail. He had zero understanding of how to be in a home, around other dogs, or people. But despite all this - Clifford is now THRIVING! He is happy, healthy, smart, sweet, and silly. He got through his heartworm treatment like a champ and has gained 20 pounds! He has learned good manners and loves all people. Cliff knows sit, stay, wait, drop it, leave it, down, come, and is working on a few other commands. He is a lower-medium energy guy who loves nothing more than to sit beside you. He is playful, and loves walks, but he mostly just wants to be with you. He would do best in a home with no children, or older children, as he truly believes he's a lap dog and doesn't realize how big he is. He cannot be in a home with small animals of any kind, as he does have a strong prey drive. With time, he has become buddies with his foster siblings, 50 and 75 pound pit mixes, and would likely do well with dogs this size (and larger) with slow, proper introductions. But we have a sneaking suspicion that he would prefer to be the only dog in the home, as he wants ALL the love he can get at ALL times. Biggie needs a quiet, low traffic home that can provide him structure and stability. He does AMAZING with his routine! He sleeps in a kennel all night without any issues and is kenneled throughout the day while we are at work. He would love nothing more than to sleep in a bed with you if you would prefer that (cuddling is his favorite), and he isn't a destructive guy (with things he isn't suppose to have, he LOVES to tear up stuffies), so he could easily free roam in a home with no other pets. He knows exactly what time of day to expect his meals and does a hilariously silly dance if you're a few minutes late getting him his dinner. He does struggle with some situational anxiety, but has truly come such a long way. Things that used to make him panic don't phase him now. In a perfect world, his forever family would live in the country, away from dogs walking in the neighborhood, weird noises outside, and lots of people coming and going. They would be kind, understanding, patient humans that realize although Cliff has made huge progress in the last eleven months, he still has lots to learn and things to overcome due to the life he lived before rescue. He is a loyal, loving companion. He is eager to please and truly wants to be the best boy. The family that adopts him will have an instant best friend. Please consider adopting our bestest Biggie boy.

More about this shelter

We are a family run rescue that we have established on our property. We pull from local animal control and shelters, as well as owner surrenders and high risk shelters. At Hard Licker Ranch we operate in small packs so that we can socialize the dogs as well as to understand the most about their personalities. We have 2 barns that are temperature controlled, and the dogs have 24 hour access to come in and out through weathered doggy doors. We do it to make life better for every dog that comes into our care and give them a second chance. We also do community outreach and TNR. Our rescue is also a Sanctuary for barn cats who need a home!
