My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Crackerjack was a favorite amongst the second floor shelter employees and was rescued from a hoarder situation. Crackerjack is a sensitive and sweet cat who may start out hiding and be very shy, but he will warm up with tempting food, patience and care. He will begin by exploring the home very cautiously, but he is very curious about humans.

In his foster home he hid a bit a fist but really enjoyed his bed made for him by the radiator and relished the heat coming from it this winter. This was his safe space and he allows pets in his bed and slowly began allowing pets outside of his bed if approached with care and respect.  Being slow and deliberate in actions with Crackerjack goes a long way.

Crackerjack begins to purr when being petted and enjoys brushing. He enjoys a nice cheek rub lightly and at first would bury his head in his bed when I did this but is becoming more confident in accepting love. He enjoys scratching or petting near the tail and sometimes even does elevator butt when he gets pets! He is beginning to really relish attention and sometimes after petting him in his bed he follows his foster into the bathroom for more pets.  He has begun to talk to his foster as well. He will chat with you when it is dinner time or if he really needs something like more pets (or is really enjoying his pets!). It really is adorable and such a rewarding job to watch him open up in his foster home. He really loves wand toys and is very athletic. Watching him jump high and flip in the air in excitement over his feather wand toy is a sight to see.

Crackerjack needs an adult only home and can easily be startled. Patience and understanding is a must with him but he truly wants to be loved and when trust is built he will show that love right back.

Crackerjack's big tom cat face melts all of our hearts and we know it will warm yours as well if you are ready to give him time to open up to you.

Crackerjack was rescued with dental issues and had surgery. In lieu of an adoption fee, we would be thrilled for a potential adopter to provide a slightly larger adoption donation and/or assistance crowdsourcing funds towards their necessary vet bills if possible.

This cat can be adopted with a friend or as a single cat.

More about this rescue

Our rescue group was formed in December 2007, but all our Board Members have had extensive experience rescuing and working with abandoned animals. We often work with other rescue organizations to find appropriate and safe foster and adoptive homes for our pet clients. We regularly go to areas with abandoned animals and collect them. The animals are taken to a licensed veterinarian examined, treated and spayed or neutered. Every effort is made to work with the animal and our foster and adoptive families to find a suitable forever home.

For those animals who are truly wild and feral, we release the animal in a safe and secure location after it has recovered from its medical treatment. We also work with certified wildlife rehabilitators to rescue injured and orphaned wildlife. Our organization is focused on improving the welfare of the abandoned animals in need of help in Brooklyn. In furthering that goal, our resources are focused on the animals.

Aside from a few minimal overhead costs such as our website and phone services, our entire budget is spent on animal care such as medical and food costs.
