Meet Howdy, the dog who refuses to let a custom tag define him. When Howdy first arrived at the shelter, he came with a tag that labeled him a `nuisance` and a `burden` to his previous family. Honestly, who would go out of their way to get a tag like that made? Well, let’s set the record straight—Howdy is *anything but* those things.
This sweet boy is the complete opposite of what his old label suggests. Howdy is an absolute gem—obedient, calm, and a champion at loose-leash walking. He’s a true snuggle buddy who thrives when he’s close to his people, loving on them and seeking affection. His gentle nature makes him the perfect companion, always eager to please and so incredibly well-behaved.
Sadly, Howdy has been quite stressed in the shelter environment, often banging his head against the bars—clearly yearning for a more peaceful and loving home. He deserves so much more than the confusion of his past, and we know that the family who gives him a chance will be richly rewarded. Howdy will offer an endless amount of love, loyalty, and companionship to the right home. If you`re looking for a sweet, affectionate dog who will be your best friend for life, Howdy is your guy. He`s ready to show the world the real `Howdy`—and we promise, you`ll fall in love with this big-hearted, good boy.
Howdy also attends playgroup so could live with a well matched dog!!

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day! For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites. For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.
Adoption Fees:
$80 cats & kittens up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
$30 small animals
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older
