This helps New Beginnings International Sporting Dog Rescue with pet care costs.
Socialization: Neda greets new people with a wagging tail and a doggie smile. She wants to make friends! On the more submissive side, Neda will let dogs approach her to see what they will do. She has a very high prey drive and would chase cats, rabbits, birds and squirrels with intent to catch them.
Training: Ned is well behaved in the house, she does not need to be crated. She has furniture privileges and will need them in her new home. She understands come inside, breakfast, dinner, ride in the car, NO. She is inclined to bolt for the outside, so we have started using the wait command, before letting her out. It is a work in progress but she does understand. We use a slow feeder with her as she would gulp her food. She does a lot of running and burns through calories. We did feed her three times a day--but she has been able to maintain a good weight now. No counter surfing. She chews the bones and chew sticks we give her.
Activity requirements: Neda is a very athletic setter. Our yard has 2.5 acres and is fenced with an electric fence. She will wrestle with our 7 year old english setter for a good hour or so in the morning, then come in for a nap! Now that the blizzards and ice have past, we are walking in the nearby state park several times a week for an hour or so. When Neda is out side, if she is not wrestling, she is on the move hunting. At two years, she could make a good agility dog, running partner.
Fence requirements: Neda will need a larger size fenced in yard. She is trained on an electric fence/collar with access throughout the day. A home where she would be stuck inside for a work day would not be good for this girl. She loves watching and chasing birds at the feeder, and stalking the rabbits that foolishly wander into the yard.
Personality: Neda is a well balanced dog. She is a confident dog with a sweet, welcoming personality. She loves to be near her people while inside, and will enjoy a good cuddle. Outside she is all about play: fetch with a stuffed toy or ball. She jumps and twirls in the air, then dashes off. She will come by to stand and watch the sunset. She is a good companion.
Health history: Neda is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and on monthly heartwotm prevention. When Neda arrived, she was on the thin side and needed to gain about 6 pounds. At this time, she is about halfway there. She is in good condition physically and mentally with no medical issues at this time. Her next Leishmaniasis test is due 09/2025.
This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.
Foster comments: Neda would benefit from a home with a fenced large yard to explore and hang out. She loves and adores her people and would NOT be happy with being left alone a full work day. She enjoys another dog for company and to share her bed or couch. With enough attention given to her, she is a great companion and could be an only dog. Neda would like to have a home that will engage her with a next step up of activities, she would love to try agility or scent work. She has the drive and the desire to learn.
