***When responding please use application at sparrowdogs.com, or feel free to tell us a little about yourself(dog experience, home, other pets...) Yep, that is him, Scrappy Joe. He actually has a body that can hold up those ears, and since coming to HOPE rescue has put on some weight and also simmered down his scrappy attitude quite a few notches, lol. Poor guy didn't catch a break in the first 5 years of his life it seems. Remember those horrific storms and tornadoes that blew thru the Chicago area last July? They were brutal. Well, this little guy spent a good part of that horrific time in his little crate, dumped in someones yard in the pouring rain!! Luckily it was a kind hearted person that took him into the vet clinic she worked at. They cared for Scrappy and even sheared him down(under anesthesia). He was a little force to be reckoned with, very fearful and defensive. He did not bite anyone, still hasn't, but sure puts on a good show of bravado when he feels the need.(not so much anymore). They contacted us, since we have found our little niche taking in so many dogs that need a little extra patience and understanding. Often, we are their last HOPE! Little Scrappy Joe has come a long way from that fearful little boy. He has been with us for months, and has made himself at home. He ADORES the other dogs, his toys, being outside and exploring the yard. He even snuggles in to his people in the evening for TV and snacking on peanuts. Plus, he is totally housebroken and pretty well mannered. He listens well, and is a smart little guy. But--he still has his triggers. He is sensitive about being touched around his hips or if someone is reaching over to pet him or the dog next to him on occasion. He did well with a Thanksgiving get together with new people. They were instructed to basically ignore him. He did get some pets, and some snacks, and had a nice time. Scrappy Joe, or as we call him now, JoeJoe, will need a very patient and understanding home. We will not be adopting him to a home with children. He needs a dog savvy home, a fenced yard is a plus as well as another playful dog. JoeJoe has so much potential. The way someone else has treated this poor guy in the past should not shape his future, he is truly putting that behind him. He just needs that special person to help him on that journey. He is about 10 pounds, 5 years old and is as cute as can be!! Please email Kristine at joysparrows@gmail.com. His adoption fee is $150, he will go home with plenty of supplies to help him settle into his new home!

We have an online application on our website, sparrowdogs.com. Requirements vary as per the individual dog's needs as far as time alone, children, other pets, fenced yard vs. leash walking and such. Our adoption donations can range from $99 for less adoptable/older dogs, and higher for puppies and other highly sought after dogs(which helps us take in needy often medically challenged dogs and cats.)
Our contract states we have the right to visit the dog, check up periodically as well as take the dog back if necessary. We get first right to the dog if adopter chooses not to keep him. We want all adopters to realize this is a serious commitment and want our dogs to go to safe, loving homes.

Go meet their pets
We periodically have adoption events, check out our website for more info! But-most of our adoption do occur at our foster home where we feel the dog or cat will be much more relaxed and the adoptive family will be able to get a better idea of the dog/cats temperament.

More about this rescue
All of our pets are in foster homes, from Sheridan to Chicago, IL We take in many special needs dogs, some physically, mentally or behaviorally challenged. Some of them have been abused or neglected, many are seniors, most just need some understanding and patience. A lot of them have never heard a vacuum before or even felt a kind pat on their heads. Fostering them prepares them for the life they so richly deserve when a kind person adopts from us. When you adopt a shelter dog, you are making a giant step in reducing euthanasia for all these great dogs looking for a home. It is not their fault, it is the fault of the human that previously was involved in their life. Thanks for checking out our website, maybe you will find the pal of your dreams.
