Let me introduce you to Mama, a 2-year-old, 20lb Havanese girl with a soft white coat and adorable eyes. Mama came to us from a puppy mill where she was used for breeding and wasn’t properly socialized or introduced to the outside world. Since coming into foster care, she has made great strides in trusting humans again and her quirky personality is starting to shine.

Because of Mama’s difficult start in life, she was quite shut down when she entered foster care. It took a few days for her to come out of her crate and she would freeze up if my hand came close to her. After spending lots of time with her and being patient, she eventually came out of her crate and has been thriving ever since. She now dances around in excitement and loves to tell me when its breakfast and suppertime. She has become quite the thief and is always stealing things to bring to her crate to chew on. One time she even stole a sock right off my foot!

Mama is fostered with two other dogs and is always trying to play with them. She jumps around and barks and tries to get them to engage in playtime. She also follows my dogs around and often looks to them for direction. Mama would do well in a home with another playful dog to show her the ropes of what its like to live outside of a puppy mill or she would also be okay to be the only dog in the home too but would need plenty of socialization to keep her moving forward. Mama likes toys, she will empty the toy basket and play but is still trying to understand fetch. She also loves chew bones and will lay in her crate happily chewing on a bone. Mama isn’t the type of dog to do well in a loud and busy home. Sudden movements can startle her so she would do best in a home without young children. Teen kids who can be quiet and calm with her would be fine.

Mama likes her crate and sleeps in it overnight and while no one is home. She goes into her crate willingly and often sleeps in there in the daytime too. She feels it is her safe space, so crate training needs to continue with whoever is interested in adopting her. Mama is doing well with house breaking. She does not have a “tell” but frequent trips outside to pee and poop have proved her well as she has never had a pee accident in the house since entering foster care. Mama is still learning how to walk on a leash and does not know basic commands like sit or stay. She is a very smart dog and with more time and confidence, I am sure that Mama will learn these commands. She is still scared of a lot of things in the outside world, so walks tend to be more of a sniff and stroll and getting used to her surroundings. The only time Mama barks is in the morning when she sees me and is excited for breakfast. She is generally very quiet. She travels well in the car, we put her in a crate, and she is very quiet during the ride.

Mama isn’t an overly affectionate dog; she is still hesitant of trusting humans and does not willingly jump up on your lap for affection. I think she simply does not know how to do this because she has never had affection before. With that being said, she has come a long way compared to how she entered foster care. Mama would flinch and freeze up when my hand came close to her, now she will lick my hand and let me give her lots of pets. She loves her ears rubbed and has rolled over onto her back for belly rubs a few times, but if you are looking for the ultimate lapdog, Mama may not be the dog for you.

Mama is a very sweet girl looking for a quiet home with someone who has lots of patience to allow her to come out of her shell. She has so much love to give and wants to be a part of whatever it is you're doing. She has been such a joy to foster, and it has been great to watch her transform into a happy little dog despite her rough start. If you’re looking for a quiet little companion that needs help adjusting to all things a dog’s life has to offer, then Mama could be the dog for you!
