My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Aloha! My name is Sake, and I’m a 1.5-year-old Labrador Retriever mix with a beautiful black-and-white coat that’s just waiting to be admired. I’m on the lookout for a family who’s ready to take me on adventures, walks, and maybe even share some belly rubs (which, by the way, I’m really good at receiving). I’m a sweet girl with a heart of gold, and I get along with other dogs, so if you’ve got a furry friend already, I’m totally down for a doggy playdate! I’m active and ready to explore the world, but when the day winds down, I’ll happily curl up for some snuggles with my new family. I’m also a bit of a professional belly rub enthusiast, so get ready for some serious relaxation time. I’m looking for someone who’s ready to give me lots of love, attention, and fun outdoor activities. Whether we’re hiking the trails, walking on the beach, or just chilling at home, I’m your girl for all the good times. If you’re on island, I’m ready to meet you anytime. If you`re on the mainland, no worries—I’ll gladly fly over and bring my charm with me! So, if you’re looking for a fun-loving, belly-rub-obsessed companion to share your life with, swipe right on me, Sake. I promise I’ll be the best match ever! Schedule a meet and greet today or walk in anytime from 12 pm - 4 pm except for Thursdays.

Read more about Sake from one of her Field Trip families had to say about their time and experience together:

“We had a great field trip with Sake. We took her to Sleeping Giant and she lead the way up the hill. We stopped for some water ad cuddles. We then went to Kenji Burgers and she rested so comfortably she fell asleep. She loves to give kisses and get belly rubs. We loved her soo much that we paid for her adoption fee all she needs now is her forever home.”

More about this shelter

The Kauai Humane Society was established by the community in 1952 as a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to protect Kauai’s animals. We opened our current home just west of Lihue in 2001 thanks to the generous support of many individuals, families, businesses and foundations. We are an independent animal welfare organization and not a chapter of any mainland or Hawaii group.

The Kauai Humane Society(KHS) is the only physical animal shelter in Kauai County, Hawaii. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a government contract to allow KHS to provide services to Kauai County for humane field services for cats and dogs.

Our facility does not turn away any sick or injured cat or dog found on Kauai. We strive to not euthanize any healthy, adoptable, and/or treatable animals for space or treatable medical reasons.

In 2022, for the year overall, KHS achieved a Live Release Rate of 94.4%; meaning 94.4% of the animals that came into KHS during 2022 were released with a positive outcome of being adopted, returned to the owner, or transferred to a rescue group.
