My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Aloha, future best friend! My name’s Atitlan, and if you’re looking for a handsome, brindle-coated charmer with a heart full of love, then look no further. I’m a 2-year-old whippet mix with chocolate brown eyes that could melt anyone’s heart. I get along with other dogs and have a laid-back personality that makes me the perfect companion for anyone. I’m always ready for an adventure, but I’m also a professional snuggler. After some playtime or a nice walk, you’ll find me curled up next to you, soaking up all the love and attention I can get. I’m looking for a forever family that loves to get out and explore. Whether it’s hiking, beach days, or just relaxing at home, I’m your guy. I’ll happily show you around the island, wagging my tail all the way. Whether you’re on island or on the mainland, I’m ready to hop on a plane and join you for a lifetime of fun, love, and tail wags. If you’re ready for a charming, adventurous, and lovable companion, come meet me at the Kauai Humane Society. I promise you won’t regret it. Schedule a meet and greet today or walk in anytime from 12 pm - 4 pm except for Thursdays.

Read more about Atitlan from one of his recent field trips families experiences here:

“ We were told Atitlan was new to the Kauai Humane Society but was extremely sweet and gentle taking treats and seemed most comfortable and at ease with our 12 year old daughter. He let us pick him up to get in and out of the jeep and across a small stream. He seemed to enjoy snuggling in the back seat on our brief car rides. Leaving the beach, he eventually was comfortable enough to walk through the small stream. We truly enjoyed our brief field trip with him and hope he soon finds the perfect forever loving family that he so deserves. We love you Atitlan!”

More about this shelter

The Kauai Humane Society was established by the community in 1952 as a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to protect Kauai’s animals. We opened our current home just west of Lihue in 2001 thanks to the generous support of many individuals, families, businesses and foundations. We are an independent animal welfare organization and not a chapter of any mainland or Hawaii group.

The Kauai Humane Society(KHS) is the only physical animal shelter in Kauai County, Hawaii. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a government contract to allow KHS to provide services to Kauai County for humane field services for cats and dogs.

Our facility does not turn away any sick or injured cat or dog found on Kauai. We strive to not euthanize any healthy, adoptable, and/or treatable animals for space or treatable medical reasons.

In 2022, for the year overall, KHS achieved a Live Release Rate of 94.4%; meaning 94.4% of the animals that came into KHS during 2022 were released with a positive outcome of being adopted, returned to the owner, or transferred to a rescue group.
